I am planning to upgrade to 30D as I don't really like 10D at ISO800 and above. Is 30D significantly better at these ISOs ? Got any comparisons at iso400, 800, 1600 ?
thanks,
Gaurawa

i've read that you can expect it to be 1 full stop better as far as noise goes. So your iso 800 will look like 1600 on the 30D. |

ISO 400 on the 10D is about similar to the 30D at ISO 1600.
ISO 3200 on the 30D is still very good and minor noisreduction can make an image taken at ISO 3200 good enough for print.

this is what I was expecting from previous posts on dpc. but I looked up 20D review on photo.net ( as 20D noise I would expect is same at 30D noise) and they didn't find 20D much better at ISO800

I had a 300D, similar to the 10D.
I have now a 20D and a 30D, and while i have not not extensive testing (no time yet) the 30D is as good at 800 as the rebel was at 400.
1600 looks useable on the 30D, but don't be makin large prints. (8x10 and up)

I just upgraded to the 30D - it has much less noise than the 10D at 800 ISO and above.
I don't have any actual comparison shots but here is a picture of my little honorary grandson, Nephi, taken on Good Friday at 800 ISO with my new 30D and 50mm lens in my quite dark family room:
It has not been edited at all except to resize and save for web. You can see it is virtually noise free and very well exposed.
I'm in love with my new 30D!! |

Taken within the same minute, both shots handheld. ISO 100 vs ISO 3200 on a 20D. 30D is comperable.
So you can decide...

In what conditions would you shoot at 1600 ISO?
Anyway, I read that the Canon 30D is really good at 1600 ISO. They were comparing it to the Nikon D200, and said it was better than the Nikon. the pictures they put foward from the Canon looked really good. |

some dance performances where I can't use a flash. I use the 2.8 lens, but still I need to use iso800 or 1600 at times if I want some dof... |

Here are a few full quality photos from my 10D.
400 ISO:

200 ISO:

100 ISO:

I know those photos are huge, but they should help give you a better idea of the noise. Also those photos are not that good IMO, the only reason I posted them is because I know for sure what ISO they were taken at so figured they would be a good example.
personaly IMO 200 iso is the highest I like to go. I will do 400 if I know the image will be shrank for web use or something. I am pretty picky with noise though, it is a big pet peve of mine.
Hope that helps

For a couple of years now Canon has beat nikon on the noise issue.

Here is a real world shot - my son was singing at church so I gave the 30D and tamron 70-210 2.8 a test - ISO 1600 at no PP except color correction
The noise is noticeble on this shot, but when you pull back to a group it is less so -
