I missed the deadline for colour studio portrait challenge as my connection was down and been out of town for Easter weekend. Also, I wasn't really sure if these would be considered "studio" type shots. Can anyone give me an idea of what they think? Since it's my first attempt at such types of shots, would be grateful for any pointers on what I did wrong and right, and if they are considered "studio" shots.

Thank you :)

I like the "hikey" shot the best of all in the series. The treatments to the others are a bit overkill IMHO. I'm not a fan of textures on faces unless the texture is a part of the portrait as in this example:

To me, the other images seem to be (forgive my lack of tact) a poor attempt at being artistic. The treatments seem to be very out of place for an otherwise beautiful model. I appreciate the fact that you were probably just playing around with effects, but in this case, less is more.

The radial gradients used in a couple of the images are OK, but the center of the gradient is on your models nose and draws attention to all the wrong areas. Your model has beautiful eyes that naturally command attention, but the lighting conflicts with that drawing your attention away from the eyes. If lighting is to be used to highlight a feature, maybe consider adjusting the lighting (or gradient) to bring the focus more to the models beautiful eyes.

I hope I'm not being overly harsh, but it's my opinion and you're more than welcome to ignore it if you so desire.

I really didn't like the shots. Not that they're not good on their own. I think they would be voted low in the challenge.

It is doubtful that any of your images would have faired well in this particualar challenge because the colors are muted and they appear to be more an attempt at artistry than at color portraiture.

The most appealing image is the B&W without the veil and it would be trashed by voters since it is not color. Its high-key nature reduces tonality and that is what voters will look for in the challenge.

Though an appealing idea with the veil, the technical quality of the images are not as high as they might be. Most images with the veil have a splotchy or low quality look to them. They appear to have been taken under low light levels. If so, you might consider reshooting them under very bright lighting conditions to capture better detail and then reducing the light in post processing if you want it to look like it was taken under low-light conditions.

Even understanding that the B&W is high-key, its lack of tonality hurts the image overall.

Your model is very beautiful and deserves the best lighting and post processing you can come up with to bring out her fine features.

Ouch!!! Thank goodness I missed the deadline LOL. But seriously, thanks for the very honest critiques. I wasn't able to be objective at all on this.

Firstly I am totally clueless about studio and lighting set-up. These were taken in natural light by the window and it was not exactly a very bright day. So stdavidson, you were definitely right about the lowlight.

And secondly, the "model" was not comfortable being photographed at all ;-) hence, the poor attempt at being artistic (as Palmetto Pixel observed)... not having another model to work with, I had to make do with yours truly.

I think I should just stick with what I'm most comfortable with for now until I can improve my lighting and find a more natural model to work with. Once again, really appreciate each of you taking the time to do this.

Eileen! You finally did a self portrait or two...

Yes, you are beautiful! I think the shots were great...the focus point on a couple of them was on your hair and not your face...give this another go please...

When I get a chance, I will comment further. I have to take my daughter to school now...
