Ok, I know that everyone and their dog gets excited and posts about losing their 'virginity' so to speak, but WOO HOO!

The Camera. It's on my bed.

I don't usually use this 'word', but here goes.

W00t!

For those who have no clue (probably all of you), this is my first SLR EVER. I am quite new to photography, but I've been interested in it for some time. Since entering a large learning curve, I've been limited by what my camera can do.

I've been pretty happy with some of the pics I have been taking lately and I feel that a move up would be useful for me. I got a job this month that put an extra whack of cash in the bank, so even though I haven't received it yet, I had the cash float, so I decided to take the plunge! Better now than later right?

The price here on the street is around 1285 US, for a proper, non-grey market body only camera. I picked up a 4GB 100X CF card (Apacer) and a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW to keep everything organized which brought the total to 1465 US.

It's currently charging.

Zippee!

Now I have to find some actual subjects to shoot. :)

And make a bunch more money so I can get myself a lens! and a flash. and....

Oddly enough, I did not. I am still undecided what I will do for a mid-range, walk-about lens.

I was thinking of getting a kit lens for wide and a 28-75 Tamron for walk-around.

I already own an 80-200 f/2.8L and my neighbor lens me his 85mm f/1.8.

since you didn't buy the kit lens with the camera, don't buy it ;)

just get a good wide lens like the 10-22 or 17-40L

the Tamron 28-75 is a great lens so you wont be dissapointed with that, but there are so many lenses better than the kit lens..

you could get the tamron 19-35mm for the wide angle

Congrats!
I can't wait to get another job so I can actually buy stuff again.. though the money I might use for a 30D and a 300 4.0L/1.4TC wouldn't hurt to be put in savings for when I move out.. heh

17mm or 19mm isn't esepcially wide on the 20D/30D. Do yourself a favor and start right out with one of the ultra-wide zooms. I prefer the Canon 10-22mm myself, but others swear by the Sigma and Tamron versions. I use the Canon 10-22, the Tamron 28-75, and the Canon 70-200, and these serve me nicely.

Interesting that you should say that Bear. I made the purchase yesterday because a friend wanted to buy himself a wide angle lens. I used your experiences o convince him to get the 10-22.

Unfortunately, that purchase pretty much tapped out my finances for a while. It will be a while before I can afford another lens.

This is the primary reason I was thinking of going for the kit lens. It's cheap.

I might be able to swing the Tamron 28-75, but I won't be able to afford the 10-22 for some time I think. May be able to get an extra bit of work for May which might help me to pay for another lens though that is more likely to be the Tamron.

I have used the 18-55 on a few people's cameras and didn't find it all that bad for general purposes.

I also hope to pick up the 50mm f/1.8 soon too.

There's nothing like getting a new camera Kieren! I love taking ANY gadget out of the box! When I got my Nikon D200 a few months ago, the first shot I took was of my D200 box...

Everything is new and exciting. Hope you really enjoy the Canon D30. It looks like a nice camera. Don't skimp on the lenses. Can I suggest a 50mm 1.4 or 1.8 first, hen a 17-40 L, and a 70-200 after that, then a macro, then a superwide, then, then, then, then...

It never stops does it?

Happy shooting!

Please remember... you glass will be around long after you 30D has bit the dust and long after your 50D dies too so take your time and get the quality glass never buy cheap glass even if it is just 'to get you by untill...' I made that muistake when first buying lenses, I found it was better to buy a used lens than a cheap one.. get good glass you will never regret it, you have a fantastic zoom already dont insult it with that awful kit lens. the Tamron is a great idea as the 3rd party lens companies now make very high quality... trust me, its worth waiting and saving than rushing and trashing..

Hope this helps

Good luck with it, Keiren - and have fun!

Thanks Pug. Maybe now I can give you a bit more run for your money ;) Ok, maybe after I read my manual... :)

I appreciate the idea of getting good glass, but it will probably be a number of months before I can get the 10-22, so I might want to have something that doesn't break my bank in the meantime that will still let me take some shots.

A camera is not a girl. It's ok if I use a lens with it short-term. I'm relatively sure that it won't be insulted.

I'm actually thinking of borrowing a friend's 18-55 kit lens. He borrowed my 80-200 for a few months. It would be nice to do something wider than 80mm (=128mm). I don't think he will let me borrow his 10-22 though :).
