We did it! We finally did it! We are officially Europe's cultural capital for the year 2010!

Although I'm not gonna be in Turkey in 2010 (thank God, we're estimating more than 10 million tourists), I'll still get to see the preparations and feel the pride.

God I am seriously so happy. I am kind of disapointed that we got this under our current government but still hopefully we'll get rid of this president in the elections next year :/

Anywayyy I know you guys don't care but you will when I'm finished cause I'll be bombarding this thread with photos, news and other things from Istanbul for the next few weeks ( I don't have the time to do all right now). Plus I'll be going there next week.

Sooo don't miss this oppurtunity to visit Turkey. Now you realllyyy have a reason.

I am hyper. Someone stop me.

Well technically you're only visiting my house. It doesn't count, our furniture is russian and belgian.

That's not certain either :P Oy TMI, I'll shut up now.

Street dude street, I haven't yet seen landscape in Istanbul. Just imagine New York, with smaller buildings, nice people, a bit more greenery here and there, same traffic, same noise, same diversity, same lifestyle and same smells, eugh.

More like czars and rain.

So now I have to use my imagination?

As far as I understand it a street is part of a landscape.

Go take a pic!

oki doki first of all let me present you Ara Guler, Turkey's most prestigious photographer and also named one of the world's 7 best photographers.

(he actually signed my camera :D )

He actually said himself that he was against digital and all that so it's incredibly hard to find his photographs on the web and I'm way too lazy to go scan from my book.

He does all b&w, of mainly old Istanbul but as well as all of Turkey.

A few of his pics

He has taken pictures of the most reknown artists of his time, such as Picasso or Dali.

More pics

Bio

He's 77 years old but still incredibly energetic and when he talks, starts babbling on.

Mooooreeee

Unfortuanetly he's saying that he stopped taking pictures of Istanbul, mainly because it's not the same anymore and has become too western too quick. That we are loosing our culture. I think he's completly right, that's what imperialism does to you. So come and visit Istanbul before it isn't Istanbul anymore :P .

He seriously is a wonderful turkish photographer and full of inspiration. I just want to take my leica and go out and take pictures!

Ah... ah...only if.

My husband and I spent 5 days/ nights in Istanbul about 6 or so years back - at EXACTLY this time of year as it happens - over Easter. And that year Easter coincided in the calendar with a major Islamic religious date too - I'm sorry I forget which one. So the city was buzzing.

I LOVED the city and it deserves to be a Capital of Culture in Europe...

Hmm islamic holiday? I have no idea :P I'm not muslim so I'm not so sure. I do know that most catholics and orthodoxes of Turkey go to Istanbul for Easter with their family that may be a reason. We do have 23april but that's the kids holiday not really religious :P Kids parade around do dances and stuff, but it's not really a holiday everyone makes a fuss over.
