Anyone out there have a sense of Adobe's future release schedule? I've been planning to buy CS2 while I can still get an educational discount (until this June), but I read somewhere the other day that CS3 is in beta testing, so I don't want to buy CS2 if CS3 is going to be out really soon... |

Seems to me a discounted full CS2 and an upgrade to CS3 would still cost less than a full priced CS3.
I have no news for you, but I doubt if there is little news that they are planning a release within 90 days. |

I seem to remember reading that CS3 would be 4th quarter at the earliest. The academic price is about 275 if I remember - get it while you can. I think the upgrades are in the 150 range. But if the academic discounts get yanked your looking at alot more |

will be when Vista is released (2007) - as its the only OS that will take advantage of 64bit CPU and the extra RAM :) |

I'd agree that CS3 probably won't see the light of day until Vista hits the streets. Adobe had been on the once-a-year-upgrade badwagon, which would imply a relase in early summer '06, but I don't think that's gonna happen.
I'd go with the educational discount on CS2. Then once the next version comes out, you can research it and figure out if it's a good idea to upgrade, or better to skip a version.

... or three or four ... unless they introduce some radical new capability (32-bit editing, something specific for your camera) or you are into all kinds of multimedia production, I doubt you'll need to upgrade as often as new versions come out.
It is perhaps telling that the low upgrade price of $169 covers any licensed version of Photoshop -- obviously, there's a lot of photographers/graphic artists other than myself still using old versions with complete effectiveness (I use 5.0 -- more than 8 years old). I just don't really need most of the cool new features ... and until I get a new camera I have no real use for 16-bit editing or RAW capability. |

Not on the subject, but a question__
Is it really worth it to sign on to be a MEMBER of dpchallenge website?
Thanks,
Becky

You're right -- you should either start a new thread or, better yet, practice searching the forums for some of the many previous discussions on this subject, where you'll find lots of opinions already available. |

Doesn't OS X currently do this?

More interesting will be the release of Adobe Lightroom Beta for windows and the launch of the retail version after that. Probably also dependant on the new Windows version release date. :(
Here is an intro to Adobe Lightroom Beta for Apple by Micheal Reichman from Luminous Landscape.

I was at an Adobe seminar at college and they said nothing about CS3. What they were promoting was Lightbox which is like a quality file browser/organiser with some photoshop editing tools. Bit like Aperture but they claim it will much better.

Most industry gossip queens put it at 8 to 14 months (as of late Feb/early March). Adobe has already sated (several times) that they won't be porting the Mac PowerPC version of CS2 to Universal binaries (to run nativley on Intel Macs), but that Universal support would come with the next major release of each title.
My personal guess is at MacWorld 2007, in early January.

I got to see the demo of their beta 3 while at this years Photoshop World Conference in Miami last month and their new web site. Can't wait for the windows version. This is a true photographer's dream from what I saw.
