I was out and about taking pictures last week for a challenge. Thought of a good idea and I took about 5 pictures. Got home and I was not satisfied so I went back the next day and took about 5 more with different lighting conditions.

I got home and edited a couple of them and found one that I really like. Without giving away my challenge entry I called the company that relates to my picture and explained that I was an amateur photographer and had taken a picture they may be interested in.

Long story short I was asked to send them a copy via email @800x and I did. I got a call back today informing me that their marketing department is very interested in my photograph. They want to talk to me about exclusive rights to the photograph. They are to get back with me this week.

My question is what kind of money would a very large company offer for the rights to my photograph?

just walked in, scott, but wanted to throw some ideas out to you. the price depends on how they want to use it, and whether or not it is a shot they could easily go get themselves. if it really interest them and is unique enough, then they could expect to pay a fair amount for it. there are a number of price calculators in this thread, and there have been some other threads dealing with this lately, as well. it might be something worth as little as $500, or as much as $50,000. if they are large enough to have an in-house marketing department, then they ought to be used to paying. one thing to do is to ask them what they normally pay for things like this.

one last point, as to uniqeness. one of my favorite photographers, the late jack leigh of savannah, took a photo of a statue in a cemetary in savannah. warner brothers didn't want to pay his price, and they took their own photo. he sued them for copyright infringement and won, because they basically stole his idea...

good luck!

exclusive use (from what I was told they would require the original photograph any edited versions and the one I sent to them via Internet. Any prints if any. And sign all right to them.)

I am not too keen on the 'exclusive rights' phrase. Like Ralhnev asks is this give them an unconditional right to use your photo or is this a one-time deal? I am a bit rusty on just how that term is applied.

But a really good source book to look up information on how much to sell your photo for is The 2006 Photographer's Market //www.amazon.com/gp/product/1582973954/sr=8-1/qid=1144716945/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-3641924-0841444?%5Fencoding=UTF8
published by Writer's Digest Books. It gives a listing of a great many of the markets out there and sometimes gives prices. If you do not wish to invest in buying the book, you could always go to Borders and thumb through to see if you can find that company and what they pay. Good Luck.

Starting to sound like it's worth consulting an IP attorney or agent -- I've heard of photos going to large corporations for $50k or more -- especially if they want to own it outright.

They can just get it out of the petty cash drawer ...

We are still talking. It would be nice to get that kind of money or even a 10th of it.
