I am seriously considering dumping my 20D in favor of the 5D, primarily because the bulk of my photography right now is not action or sports, and there are several lenses in my kit that I would prefer to use at their intended focal lengths. I also don't think I want to keep the 20D as a second body; the 5D would be a lot of money to put down and I would like to offset part of that.

So on that note, can anyone offer some personal experiences from having used both camera models in the field and can relate their perception of how they stack up? Aside from the frame rate, does the 5D respond quickly by comparison? I know the technical specs, but feel is equally important. Knowing something is x milliseconds faster or slower, even a a percentage, does not always tell you a lot about the perceived feel.

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

I had the 20D and got the 5D in December, the 20D has more fps, but the focus in the 5D is much faster, it has spot metering and is just great for everything... you can even use it for action sports, but you might miss that critical moment ;)

paning with 5D

action freeze with 5D

studioshot with 5D

I think you can't go wrong with the 5D, the only thing I miss from the 20D is the FPS and the reach of the 1.6 crop ;)

The main things that I've noticed after the switch are:

1) The controls are identical! You'll feel right at home.
2) It doesn't have pop-up flash.
3) It doesn't have "program modes" (sports, portrait, landscape, etc).
4) I shoot RAW only, and have found that a 1G card only holds 56 images! (yikes, I'm going thru memory cards like crazy)
5) The flash sync speed is only 1/200 (on the 20D it was 1/250).

#1 was a pleasant surprise.

#2 and #3 don't bother me a bit, I never used them on the 20D - not even once.

#4 is of some concern for me. I will probably purchase some 2G or 4G cards because of it. So just beware - you may need more memory! (I'm also chewing up disk space at an ever increasing rate)

#5 took me by surprise. But with the larger sensor, and thus bigger shutter, the travel time across the image probably prevents it from sync'ing at a higher speed. You can, of course, set your Canon 550 or 580 to "High Speed Synch" and it still works. But your studio strobes will require you to shoot at 1/200th or slower.

Oh yeah! That's another thing that surprised me. I knew about the larger LCD on the back. But the viewfinder is bigger/brighter too! BONUS! :-)

It amazed me to.. until I got my EOS 1V and saw what the viewfinder of the 1 series is like... much brighter and bigger :)

Thanks for all the feedback. I don't think the 5fps is something I will miss - I don't rely on it now. I never really found the 3fps on the D60 to be much of a limiting factor before the 20D, the D60 had limitations in other areas like startup speed and focusing points.

I think I will be looking into a 5D in the near future.
