Transferring a great,(IMHO) definition of "candid" from a thread that was just locked.
Wikomedia definition.
The photographic setup of candid photography is best described as un-posed and unplanned, immediate and unobtrusive. This is in contrast to classic photography, which includes aspects such as carefully staged portrait photography, landscape photography or object photography. Candid photography is supposed to catch rare instances of life from the very immersion into it, rather than to produce imagery of still life, to catch rare moments of "reality" which presupposes a definition of "reality."
Now THIS.... ...
is CANDID...and it isn't a person
The definitions and stated challenge subject threads get deeper and deeper and deeper...

People seem to be pushing...lobbying hard for the validity of animal candids but at the end of the day, while they're absolutely right people think of people when they think candids and people candids IMHO are tougher to nail...Great people candids, that is. Face it....unless you offer up a spectacular....rare animal event...something cool and out of the ordinary, you're probably not gonna get much attention. PETA might be your best bet if you're looking for high votes.
(The cat shot is terrible, I know)
The degree of difficulty between getting these two shots was monumental. The homeless guy after he spotted me taking his picture, agressively walked up to me...pulled out his "thing"...waved it at me and shouted, "take an f-ing picture of this". Pretty scary stuff. I thought he was going to try and smash my camera.
While my cat on the other hand was hanging around all day doing a multitude of fun candid things. Not much of Challenge getting a shot of him.
Most animals don't get self-concious in front of the camera....hold up there hands in front of their faces and hide...get pissed off if you pop away 50 shots....give you the finger...need I go on?

Kinda hard to get a good photo in when comments say "I don't like cell phones"
So did I get a 1 because there was a cell phone in the photo or was the pic rated on it's merit?
Does candid photos have to show "emotion" or is is a glace at life in an unprepared way? Is a pic of a dog staring at the camera really candid, do dogs have thought and know they are being looked at. Is it really candid then? Isn't candid supposed to something unexpected or without preparation on the part of the subject? If the subject was prepared then is it really candid?
At a wedding most of us take "candid" shots ... but .. are they really candid. Everyone knows that we are there with out big cameras snapping hundreds of photos. There is indeed a feeling of being prepared even though facial expressions and actions appear unprepared. Time to get back to rating photos on their merit and techinical abilities not preparation or PS skills so much, especially in basic challenges. Advanced we can all be artists and graphic designers.

Preparation and photo editing are essential and necessary skills in digital imaging and it is rare, indeed, when a picture does not require further attention. It is a fundamental misconception of amateur photographers that a camera can capture things as "they really are". It can't, never has been able to. Cameras have exceptionally limited recording capabilities compared to the human eye. Cameras and image editing work together in tandem to produce a photograph.

Absolutely agree, especially with those who shoot higher end camera with RAW. Not much basic about it really. So in a photography site where the idea is to focus on photographic skills does a photo that requires taking a photo, putting it on another monitor, cutting out a figure or person or thing and taping it to the monitor display then prop something else in front of it all to give depth perception and then make all the RAW adjustment, it that photography .... yup but much more graphic design. I believe that setup is critical and often misunderstood in photography. The true photographer takes life as it is and makes it appear like the eye sees in in dimension, depth, contrast and color. Graphic artist take photos and other objects and make likewise great art also but the emphasis has been shifted. I guess myself and many others see using a picture on a monitor as using other artwork an is kust not the same as using a backdrop that needs more skill in lighting, angles etc. The best photographer can use PS and stay within basic rules and do a better job that the average photog can do on advanced challenges. I guess the clasic question is photography as an art form or graphic design using photography as it's basis.
