I searched the forum to make sure this is not a duplicate thread.
While browsing a comment on the forum this evening, I came across graphicfunk's profile. He offers some great insights into the voting and commenting process on challenges (obviously trolls excluded) right in his bio.
Originally posted by graphicfunk: I go through every image in the first cursory look
I break up images in 4 categories and I use place holders to hold images. I am now using 4,5, 6 and 7.
My second scan is much more studious and I begin the permanent placement. If I comment on an image in the cursory scan and say it is good it will nevertheless get placed in the above numeration, which I use as place holders. Remember: it is not over until the fat lady sings.
NOTE: I never vote one's or two's. I mean, a one is the worst. Have not seen many of those. Who are these masters that vote 1 and 2's. I wish they could identify themselves, they have so much to teach us.
Happy to help beginners with their images. |
I found this extremely informative as I am new to voting on other peopleâs creative work. Trying to learn what it is the expert voters see in their votes and comments.
Thank you Daniel

The way I vote? Firstly I open the photo, look at the photo, move curser to the desired number (1 to 10 scale), click on the number of my choise then on to the next one. LOL ;-)))

That's how I do it too usually. |

My system is I'll briefly look at the image (studying it for a while will just confuse me and throw off my impressions). If I think/say out loud "wow!", then it gets an 8 or 9. If I go "hmmph, that's pretty good", I give it a 7. If I'm indifferent, I'll give it a 5 or 6. If I just don't think too much of the image, I'll give it a 4. Below that, it's a case-by-case basis.
I'm not really bothered by giving out 2's or 3's, simply because I think of '5' as being average, so obviously images I feel are below average I will score as such. It's usually pretty clear when people have put little to no effort into their picture, so why should they get marks close to average just out of principle? An image really has to be terrible for me to give a 1, though.

Now I know why I never get any replies from you, Ken!

Here is how I vote:
10 - That's absolute perfection! I cannot see how you could improve on the shot and words won't help the shot because it tells a thousand words
(I rarely give these out and if you get one, you really deserved it)
9 - This is my top score given in most challenges. Shot is near perfect minus an 'imperfection' or something I might hvae changes
8 - This is for great shots that make me go wow. Excellent above average with a few things that could be better
7 - This is an above average shot of high quality
6 - This is an above average shot
5 - This is a good shot. Average. It's well taken, but nothing to write home about
4 - below average shot
3 - below average shot with several problems like blurriness, bad composition, overprocessing, boring subject matter
2 - this is a 'you shouldn't have bothered' shot. It's way off the mark because it's so corny or technically flawed or irrelevent to the challenge etc
1 - This is just not even worth the effort. Most ones I give are for some of those shots that look tlike they were taken with a cell phone and are too small to see properly and they look like an out of focus mess
NOTE: I try and comment on about 30-40% of shots and try and stay positive unless of course I can't
Also, the challenge topic is important and overides everything...unless, sometimes it's such a great shot that it needs an extra point
I think I get more learning out of voting and making comments because it makes me look at my work more intensly.

Everything starts with a 5. In preliminary voting it gets -1 for subject being out focus, -1 for not meeting challenge, +1 for being interesting. So everything starts out 3-6 (rarely any threes). Then I go through again:
+1 for color, tone, clarity
+1 POV appropriate to image or DOF appropriate to image (which ever weighs more)
+1 for editing that enhances image or -1 for editing that detracts
+1 for going beyond the challenge.
I rarely score an image below 3. The fact that you took the time to go out and shoot at all deserves 2 points.
I give out 10s. At minimum to my three favorites in the challenge. People say a 10 must be perfect. For me, a 10 is a great image for that particular challenge. I'm not comparing these to Adams or Bresson.
People complain of trolls in the early voting. It could just be people like me who rank and re-vote. I have different moods, different lighting in my room, different thought patterns over the week and I find it more fair to look at an image more than once.
If I have entered the challenge, I have no problem voting the challenge. I can usually judge where my image will score and I know that I will received more 1-3s and more 8-10s than I deserve. It does not effect my vote but it does improve my ability to discern what will score well. I may not agree with it, but I can pick out a DPC shot with the best of them.
Also, I'm not always looking for perfection, particularly in the basic challenges. I know there are people who are less skilled at editing. I give them the benefit of the doubt. If cropping an inch off the bottom would make the image 'perfect' I will note that in the comments and rank it highly. Same for the telphone pole. Or a distracting piece of dust. Things that can be fixed can be fixed. Major problems such as POV or DOF cannot be fixed and so weigh more heavily on my scoring.
edit to add: For all you who want the "challenge topic held in highest regard" when voting, I rarely re-rate anything below a 5. So, a DNMC (of which there are very, very few) will never score above a 5, no matter its technical proficiency.

I vote a lot like hotpasta does. And like dahkota, I tend to go back and re-evaluate after I've finished a first pass. I will not lower a score at that point, but I do raise scores.

In my first pass I give good images a 6 and great images a 7. Average shots get a 5, below average get 1-4. I don't give many 1's, and most 2-3 votes are DNMC or just way below average. I then go back and re-evaluate the 6 and 7 votes, ending up with 6-10's. I almost never lower a score, but do raise them. |

I do give out a lot of 1s in my first "round".
I give 1-6 only. Then, I go back again by each group. I start with 6 and distribute them between 6-10. I go to 5, and distribute it between 5-7, and so on. So, technically, in the end I rarely keep 1s as the score. They usually get bumped up to a 3 or 4. :)
I know, my system is weird, but it works for me.
I also try to leave as many comments as possible.

I think that might be skewing the system a bit too much.
Your average vote at 4.8 is way lower then the majority of the membership who generally are in the 5-5.6 range. The mean vote for a competent, average picture is between 1 and 10, not between 0 and 10. therefore the middle vote is 5.5, not 5 (as most people do and I used to do). If there's nothing 'wrong' with a pic, then it shouldn't score less than 5.
If you're handing out 1s by the handful, I don't understand. 1's are for really really really bad pictures. There are not very many of those submitted to DPC. You're being too harsh to people who have put a lot of effort and thought into a picture that has nothing wrong with it. It might make you feel really good but it's just unfair and really not a very nice thing to do

A question for those of you that use placeholder votes? Do you always make it back to reevaluate every image? Do you always have time to even give every image a placeholder? I mean, we all have real lives outside of DPC. Sometimes we don't have time for every image. I hope that's not the case for those of you using these placeholder votes. I think it would be a shame for an image to not get the score you would actually give it because you didn't get a chance to come back. Maybe I'm just a really busy person, but I find it hard to imagine having the time to vote twice on evrey image in a challenge. |

Kiwipix, I don't keep the 1's..they are placeholders. I bump them up on my second pass. Repeating what I said: "I rarely keep the 1's"

If I'm going to vote in a challenge, I vote on each entry. When I reevaluate, I go through my lower votes (generally 4s, a few 3s, no 2s or 1s) and see if any of those are really 5s. Then I go through my 6s and 7s and pick the 8s and 9s. I very rarely give 10s. Just gave one in Textures, though.
I do get back to do the reevaluation, and yes, I have a life outside of DPC (though it doesn't seem that way sometimes.) Otherwise, I don't vote at all - not fair to do half the entries without even seeing the other half, in my opinion. |

I always re-evaluate images I give a 6. They typically range from 6-10.
Most of the time I re-evaluate 5s. At least 1/2 stay 5 but the rest get bumped, usually by no more than 1 or 2 points.
Sometimes I re-evaluate images I give 4 and 3 on first pass. Typically, they are either way off the challenge topic (a mountain in a portrait challenge) or so out of focus I can't see what I'm looking at.
I don't have all the time in the world so I spend more time on images where it seems more time was spent in their creation. I only think it is fair. |

I usually only ever do one pass on my votes. I never go back and look over them again...I usually don't have the time. And, I think I'm happy with what I vote them the first time anyway...first impressions and all that!

i try to point and click as fast as possible..... lol just kidding... i try to look and see what was put in to the picture. If it is eye catching. I look for pics that are one of a kind. But i do try and grade each picture as if it was the only one i was grading. i hardly ever go undera 5 all pictures i have seend on here are awesome some people on here have some really good tallent..... But any ways...I always go from start to finish on the voting i think its only far.

The majority of my votes fall between 5 and 10. On occasion there might be an image that gets less but it is rare. If someone takes the time to post an image that meets the spirit of the challenge I can't see how it deserves anything less than a 5. It bothers me a bit to see the top 10 challenge results and the winner just be above a 7 and the remaining 9 in the sixes. If you look at it as a scholastic grade that means that the people voted the winners image a D. Now there are some that vote the curve and I understand that. They vote each image as if they were picking the the one they like the best (10) all the way down to the one they think should finish last (1). That makes sense to me. However, when a person's average votes given falls well below what the average should be in that case (5.5 to 5), I think that says way more about the voter than the images they vote on.

1) Well first I go through and find all my friends photos and give them 10's no matter what.
2) Then I also give 10's to all the people I recognize from my Fave's list.
3) Anything with CHEESE, pets, dogs/cats, kids, or nudes automatically gets a 1.
4) Any photo with a certain "DPC style" also gets a 1 for not being creative and being thereself.
Now back to reality, I'm pretty considerate when I vote and usually dont vote below a 4.

Voting is possibly the biggest obligation that members partake. I say obligation because it is very easy to go through the images one time and press the value button. However, fast as I am in making comments and judging the viability of an image, it can not be done in one pass. Some images require further digestion. You must bear in mind that you will miss and underrate many a good image if you use the wow factor as your criteria. While many of these "wow" images are good there are many that show their beauty in a more subtle manner.
To me it is an obligation because frankly I would rather be doing something else with my time, but then I would be short changing members.
There are times when I abandon comments all together because there are so many images to vote on. We have all been there, yet I try my best to comment because it does mean mean a lot to the participants. |
