Here was my entry of the Children's Toy challenge:
Did I do something wrong by taking the idea from this image a while back?
.
I didn't execute mine nearly as well as the ribbon winning shot.. but still, the concept is kind of the same.
I got a couple comments stating they were docking points for lack of originality... Honestly, I planned on doing this for the Deja Vu challenge, but didn't really have time. Then I saw the "Children's Toy" challenge and thought it would fit too. It didn't really occur to me that this may offend people viewing my image, or the creator of the first one.
Is what I did wrong? Or are people just picking on me? |

If I had to guess, it's because a baseball isn't really considered a "children's toy".
It's an item used in sports, and children play baseball a lot, but I think iconographically, it's more attuned to an adult past-time.
Especially since you used an adult in your photo to show the item in use. |

The second image has much more power and interest due to the body posture of the pitcher. You've got a clearer and brighter baseball, but the second image tells me a better story. Just my opinion. |

Ha, well actually that's not an adult in the photo...it's a baseball action figure. I'd consider it a toy...or a collector's item.
But anyway, my question isn't "Why didn't my photo do any better?". I know I got a 5.6 because it's a 5.6 photo. I'm just hoping I didn't make anybody mad. |

Oh. I hardly doubt you made anyone *mad*. Some people are just a little too uptight and like to bitch about silly things like tributes to old challenge entries. |

I didn't mind that it was an idea used in the past... and a baseball is a children's toy! Just because "grown-ups" play if for millions of dollars a year doesn't make it "not for children"

A 5.6 is not a bad score.
It would've been a better fit for DejaVu, but I think it fits this challenge well enough.
I think the original was done better. The combination of the extreme DOF and also the lighting on the ball just don't make this very realistic. The original, with some imagination, you can accept it to be "real" (well, sort of).
If the shadowing on the ball made it look like it was outdoors in a ballpark, I think it would've scored better. |

I think its a fine image and you didn't do anything wrong at all by using the same idea as a previous entry. Obviously that image inspired you, so it seems like a compliment to the original shooter to me.
Besides, one is hard pressed to find many images that don't have elements of others that have come before them. Others could conceivably be near copies with a little something from the photographer to make it different.
Who knows, maybe toddhead saw the idea/technique somewhere himself and decided to try it, wouldn't that be ironic.
All told, I wouldn't worry about it.

Jason, I think your Line Drive got voted lower because your action figure looks like it might be Mr. Steroids himself while Painting the Corner has a Cubs pitcher. People hate Barry Bonds while the Cubbies are perceived as lovable.
Seriously, IMHO, in your shot the baseball is new and bright, almost over-exposed and losing detail while the other has a dirty baseball that adds a lot of texture to the image; and your batter is a little more blurry than the pitcher, thus making the connection between ball and player a bit tougher for the viewer.

Jason, I'm one of the people that said that I was docking you a point for originality... To me, and this is only my opinion, it looks too much like the original image. If you would have done something to make it your own like use a soccer ball or a football or a yo-yo even, this would have, again just my opinion, been a much more potent shot. It's just too close to the original. I have to admit that once I had the IDEA for my shot, the image that you refer to is what I was trying to emulate... |

Totally agree! And please don't think that I didn't like your shot, it was done well. I just have a thing about a photographer taking anothers idea and not making it their own... God I wish I were a better writer so I could put it into words better... |

When I saw the picture what made it not as good as the other is the lighting. The contrast between the baseball and the background just did not look natural like the first picture. To me it kind of looked like a picture that someone had added an extra person in and the lighting hitting that person was different from the light hitting the original photograph.
I hope I'm making sense here.
