I think I know what you mean and I do believe that 720 V photos will score slightly lower than 720 H photos because of the scrolling. But there is a simple way around this problem. I am running a 1024x768 resolution and when I vote I press F11 allowing me to see the full 720 V photo without scrolling as much, if any at all.
So in this challenge I believe that anyone that cannot see the full vertical picture should vote in the F11 mode. Problem solved

Even in F11 mode I can't see the entire photo. While I don't intentionally score less, I can't get the full impact of the shot. |

That doesn't solve the problem. Even if the solution is out there for voters that doesn't mean they are going to use it.

Agree! you are right about that. I think there was a comment made the other day about a user would not scroll down to see the full picture if the top of the picture did not interest them. I know they have to vote, thus scroll down, but I think in there mind they have already made up what they will score the photo even though they have to scroll down. Or they may just pass by the picture all together and not vote.
I agree with chaimelle as well. There is something about seeing the whole picture at one time that can make or break the impact of the photograph. So I don't know what the solution is to size issue. Maybe 640x640 max is all we need and just boost up the 150K to 200k or 250k for more detail.

What about allowing the photographer the option to load a second larger image on the submit page? Say we keep the "default" at 640 on the voting page but then have a button the voter can click on to get the bigger version in a popup window if they wanted to inspect the detail further? That way those that want the larger image can get it and those on dialup can just ignore the button.
The only problem I see with this is the total file size goes up to 350k (150k + 200k).

Good idea as long as it don't resize or skew the picture. you may want to run that by D&L.

Glad to know about that F11 thing! Didn't know that was an option. |

Boosting the K would be great except that those with dial-up 150K is a long time. At 250K with a 400+ challenge would take forever and would lend to partial views or even worse no viewing.
I would think that your puter set to the proper resolution F11 should be perfect for viewing.

There's already a rather thorough discussion of this topic in this thread. |
