It's not a bee, but a wasp! Not sure what kind though!

After looking on the web, it appears this one has only one pair of wings and wasps have two. But it distinctly has the body characteristics of a wasp. I'm still looking!

Offhand I'd say one of the paper wasps, but I haven't looked it up yet. I'll let you know if and what I find. General tips for wasp removal though, deal with them at night, and if you need light cover a flashlight with red cellophane. They're usually only a danger if the nests are threatened (or in the case of allergies), so if nests are high and unlikely to be disturbed you may be able to let them be?

edit- And if that IS a wasp, it must be a male because there's no sign of an ovipositor/stinger. I noticed too that only one pair of wings was visible, which would make it a diptera, or species of fly, that mimics wasps, but wasn't sure if the second just wasn't clear. Still checking!

Mud and stringy, grass, twig-like stuff. I have seen solid mud-daub hives but not one like this. Should've taken a pic while i was there. One of them is right over the entrance to the back door. UGH!!! I hate bees/wasps..ect

Pure speculation on my part, but it does look like a Poliste wasp...Poliste Wasps

Take a look and decide for yourself.

Well, I didn't have a whole lot of luck of finding the exact coloring. It appears that it is a mud dauber by it's build and nesting habits. Raid's Wasp and Hornet spray works very well, it shoots a long way (keeps you away from them) and they drop immediately if you hit them with the spray. I use to use it to spray my front porch, this would keep them from building new nests.

I don't mind killing wasps. I was stung in the eye when I was a kid, no fun for a few weeks.

You might also want to read this Disposal of Wasp Nests Your best bet is to do this at nightfall... they are not as aggressive, believe me.
