Let's build one:

I Know we have the talent here, to work on such an open source style project.

There are several features a browser plugin could add to DPC. Right off the top of my head, I'm thinking score updates :-)

Any takers to help on such a project?

Sounds like a neat project! If I were a programmer I would gladly offer my help, but unfortunately I can offer little more than moral support.

One suggestion I can make, though, is to get in touch with Drew and Langdon via the contact page before progressing too far with this, as their approval is technically required. I doubt they'll have a problem with it, but they way want to impose some limits (such as frequency of score updates) so as not to overload the site. They might also be able to offer some assistance, like maybe a condensed page that would offer you critical information for your toolbar without having to screen-scrape the whole front page, profile page, etc., making your job easier and reducing the load on DPC.

I look forward to seeing this!

Most of such a plugin would rely on RSS feed, something that D&L would have to implement themselves into the site before anybody can use the data.

True, a RSS or XML feed would help a lot. But, even a PHP Include to access the MySQL database Would be less taxing on the servers than screen-scraping and a lot less taxing than us update button junkies.

Never wrote a plug in before. I'm vb.net/access kind of programmer. If you have something I can read about it PM me and I maybe able to do something.

Building an Extension

Mozilla Documentation

Edit to add: To proceed, we would need to come up with an XML structure for what we would need to ask D&L to feed.

Hmmmm...I see there was a request for RSS feeds in that thread. About the plug-in though, I think an open-source project by the users would help D&L out a lot.

I think your jumping the gun, first is to get a list of wants. What (specifically) do you want this extension to do? The more specific it is the better. Then with the list in hand, a presentation to D&L for feasibiliy considerations. Only once the list has been made and approved can a useful structure be made.

Also, it will be best if it is limited to a specific topic of task. The more tasks the utility has to do, the more compromises must be made in making it (or the complexity goes thru the roof, either one).

That said, I don't use firefox so it's of no value to me -- but an RSS feed is very universally useful.

Steps:
-User Requirements
-Functional Requirements
-Prototype/Coding/Testing/
-Detailed Design documentation
-User Acceptance (Beta release)
-Official Live Version Release

Repeat as necessary (reducing FeatureCreep) - like when people say "ooh ooh, I want it to do *this* and *this*.

What would users want it to do?

I myself would like to see score updates as the first feature.

Any other suggestions?

It could show the current challenges, with a link to the challenge descriptions.

Put too many things into it and it will be easier to just type the URL in the address bar (or make it a favorite link).

Ideally, to be useful, the toolbar would need to provide additional functionality to the site. Thinks like notification of comments, challenges, images posted by favorite photographers, current score, image picked as favorite, friends list (including when they are online), etc. Currently, DPC does not provide notifications about most things -- there is a notification when membership is due to expire and if validation is needed for your image, but not much else.

It should not try to replace the functionality that is already provided.

Let's remember we don't want to ask D&L to do a lot of coding.

only 1 basic item should be in there:

1. score update!

anything else, just visit DPC's homepage!

I want it to block me from accessing DPC during working hours. I have been unsuccessful at using the firewall to do it since I keep tricking myself into giving up the password and then I just go and unblock it.

Beyond that:
- RSS feed for specific threads like "Sexy Bikini-clad Woman Showering...."
- Email me the names and addresses of voters when they vote 1's on my challenge entries
- Include a beer cap remover on the sidebar

I think that's it for now. Now let's get to coding! :)

lol. Actually the RSS feed would be really cool for threads in general of course. :)

A little graph to plot scores everytime the update button is pressed would be cool, and a little thing saying "last vote recieved" using maths and crud :P
