No, they won't care, because it doesn't matter, as long as the quality of the final image is OK.

OK, I have another question.
If you use LZW compression for your TIFs, does the file size have to be at least 48MB before compression of after?

Before compression.

Before compression.

Jodie, Thank you!

Is there a way to check after you saved the file as tiff with LZW compression if it is still over 48MB?

LZW is lossless compression, meaning when the file is uncompressed (e.g., you open it with Photoshop), the data is 100% exactly the same as the original, uncompressed file.

ZIP and Stuffit archives also work this way; data is compressed for storage, but restored bit-for-bit when the process is reversed.

It is primarily the JPEG format (and a few others not commonly used anymore) which actually discard data as part of the compression process, leaving the restored data (e.g. when you print from a JPEG) only a close approximation, but not an exact match, to the original.

Now, when you open a JPEG, the ultimate file size is the same -- no pixels are discarded -- what you lose is some of the detailed information about those pixels.

If you re-save in a lossy format (JPEG), you'll then end up with an approximation of an approximation, which is why you should only convert a file to JPEG as the very last step in any editing sequence.

Thank you.

Another question.

If your pictures get rejected, do they tell you what was wrong with them specifically?

no i don't think so, but if you make it around 12 MP it should be fine.
Not all my images end up being 48MB before compression either. If you take a picture of a polar bear on the north pole, there is going to be a LOT of white, and if you have a 12 mega pixel image, it is going to be a LOT smaller than your image of black nothing. Whites don't take much memory as blacks.
so my point is, I believe they look at MP as much as anything.

However, I wouldn't follow this advice for your initial submission, just the submission afterwards.

Every color value in RGB takes the same 24 bits (3 bytes) of data to store, unless compression is used. A file which is 48MB will have to contain a certain number of pixels, and in uncompressed TIFF will take up the same amount of disk space regardless of what color(s) it contains.

actually, I figured out how to verify the size after saving and compressing it. Just go to Image Size in Photoshop and it shows you the actual file size.
I think I am good to go. Just have to process 5 more pictures.

I've been with Alamy since Nov 2004, slowly adding to my portfolio at around 100 images per month (I've got loads of travel shots to submit). Images in my portfolio have been taken on Kodak DX6490, Canon EOS SLR (Film/Superia) and my EOS 300D.

Well, sent them a disk with about 10 Mardi Gras 2006 pictures, and 4 more from Hurricane Katrina damage, and I just finished keywording all of them. Hopefully someone will want some pictures from the "Historic" first Mardi Gras in New Orleans after Katrina! I can hope! :-)
