I was wondering if it would not be a good idea to start the new challenge ie to give the theme one day later, so that monday people will keep focusing about learning from the previous week challenge, talking about it about the results and everything. I know I am free to access the page only on tuesday but in everybody's mine the new one is kind of already started. What do you think ? Or maybe give one day less to vote, so people would have the results on saturday night. Lionel

I think this is an excellent idea. That way the ending challenge could be discussed without being distracted by the new one. Boy I bet that would cause some unusual comments.

I don't think that would work too well because it would reduce (by 1 day) the number of days to shot. What I was thinking though, I would like to see the cutoff day-of-week change. If it cut off on Thursday, giving us the new challenge on Friday, that would give us the whole weekend to shoot plus the first part of the week. |

Yes .. but people have more time during the week end, that's why I suggested to remove the monday. And it depends as well if globally people wait for the Week End or not. For example I think about my shot (when it the pencil for example) during the week, make some tests but do the definitive one on sundays. For the 'candid' one ... less preparation and more ... going outside and being open (or inside)

I like the way it is now. We have all week to plan for our photo and the weekend to shoot. Also, If you decreased commenting time by one day, either comments would suffer, or I wouldn't be able to get to everyone. 6 days to comment on 185 photos would mean 31 comments every single day. Maybe to the people who simply comment "cute" or "nice pic", that is entirely reasonable, but for the people who actually make the useful (or at least thoughtful) comments, it is kind of unreasonable to ask. I can spend up to 45 minutes with one photo. 6 days is simply not possible for me. i'd probably have to resort to the "nice pic" comments, or something. |

I understand that. But at the same time it looks to me that we (globally) rush too quickly in the new challenge. One of the purpose I guess is learning so I think that one day less for voting would help that because we would not 'forget' as quickly the previous challenge. At the same time I understand what you're saying. Do not know the balance but it looks to me that we 'forget' the previous challenge a little too quickly and a little too much. I know there is still people talking about it but ... (And by the way I really understand as you left a pretty long comment on my 'pencil' last week. Thanks again for it). Lionel

I agree that SOMETHING should be done, although I am not personally brimming over with ideas.
I love dpc, but to me the biggest shame is that we don't get much in the way of post discussion. It would be nice to have some back and forth on the photos after the results have been revealed. I get so attached to certain photos during the challenge and then suddenly they're yesterday's news...
Separately, but in the spirit of changes I'd like to see, I wish you could see from a person's profile which photos were in their top ten for the week. I know that might be hard because people might have more than ten photos that fare equally, but even if there was an extra button that we could click while voting (in addition to the score) to indicate that this is in the voter's top ten. Seems this would in some ways balance the many issues over the different scales that people are using. This should be a different thread. It just came to me and I had to type it.
Back on topic, I agree to not releasing the next week's challenge until one day later... We're not seeing an awful lot of submissions on day one anyway. There are currently 10 (roughly 6% of all the challenge submissions for childhood). As for delaying the voting, I can see the down side of that -- in the commenting aspect.
Perhaps delaying the next challenge is enough. That would mean comments would inevitably happen on the current voting and on the previous challenge. Rather than both of those in addition to the the hubbub over interpreting the new challenge.
