Chris and I will be there, probably arriving Friday night. That was the plan anyway, but now we are having dog sitting difficulties. We thought that we had that worked out. We'll resolve that issue and make it. |

Unfortunately all my friends either suck a$$ or are already going out of town and I won't make the drive alone. Last time I was reading directions and driving I ran off the road and ended up on some guys front lawn. Thank god they were drinking beers so I stopped there to join them for a pint and all the owner ask was that next time I use the driveway like everybody else. I replied "I thought this was drive thru". |

Unfortunately the cash situation is even worse than I thought right now so I am going to have to graciously (I hope) bow out this time. Please keep me in mind though the next time a GTG is organized. Hopefully not too far down the road my money situation will improve so I won't have this problem again. I am extremely disappointed. I was really looking forward to meeting everyone.

Well, I can see who's out...
Who actually is going to make it? |

Hey Roxanne, I think it would actually work out good if I missed the kayak this time. I'm waiting for a couple of checks myself and it would be a splurge right now.
As for me and ORCA...no problem. I'll get to share the presentation with others. Putting it together was time well spent.
I work for a local entertainment magazine, as a freelance photographer. My weekends are always busy photographing events, so if this doesn't work out for this weekend, no hard feelings at all, I'll just work.
Roxanne, you've put so much time and effort into this, and I know the others appreciate it as much as I do. Rescheduling might be a good option.

Chris,
It's now down to you and Crystal and my husband and me.
I've got some ideas about how we can make the best of our tiny GTG.
Please tell me that your bus is coming into Vero Beach and not Ft. Pierce?
email, or call me to discuss the details.

the bus is going to vero. it stops in fort pierce so we can transfer buses.
well i guess it's going to be a really small gtg but thats still really cool. i already have your name down so memorizing your husbands should be too trying after hearing it about twenty times.
we're also happy about the camping alone thing. it's going to be a great getaway for us.

My husband's name is AJ. Easy to remember.
On the bright side; this allows us complete flexibility. Since there are only 4 of us, we can go out in our boat instead of kayaks, if you like. (Save about $65.00) The ORCA presentation is cancelled, but we can still go there or somewhere else.
We'll stop for lunch and regroup when I pick you up in Vero.
Have a good night, and travel safely!

i might even break a 4!
(after having about 80 comments about how my pic doesn't really apply to the contest)

I'm really disappointed that a LOT of people who seemed interested had to bail out of this GTG. Lack of participation is the main reason (not the only one though) that we decided not to drive almost 4 hours to attend.

If I'm not mistaken, there are only two DPC'ers attending, and counting their guests, this GTG totals four people.
I hope that you all have fun, it sounds like you will. Kayaking is enjoyable, but going out on the boat instead could get you to the photo ops quicker and will also be fun. I look forward to seeing what we missed out on.
Hopefully, the images that you share on your return will ignite some interest in doing this GTG with a few more DPC participants in the near future. |

well i'm back from the florida GTG and let me tell you i learned a few things this weekend.
1. what a water moccasin doesn't look like.
2. the importance of "listening to A.J.".
3. what it's like to see an alligator up close.
4. how not to upset manatees.
5. how truely cool roxanne and A.J. really are.
i searched gardens for chrome and we visited oslo where butterflies posed for our amusement. we braved the STORM OF THE CENTURY and traveled down THE FORBIDDEN RIVER OF DEATH. we witnessed the feeding of the manatees and i got a great shot for the Candid contest which i probably shouldn't use for the sake of common decency.
( since i am a total bastard and have no truck with decency i will probably submit it anyways... you have been warned )
as soon as we're done editing the pictures, crystal and i will post them.
many many thanks to roxanne and A.J. or, as i like to call them, our saviours from the storm.
chris.

Sounds like you had an adventure. Did you follow the trail at ORCA to the wetlands? Did you find a bunch of birds?
I'm sorry I couldn't make it.

Adventure is an understatement. Chris and Crystal win an award that I have just coined "The Most Hardship Suffered in Order to Travel 115 Miles for a GTG".
They endured possible serial killers, generally rude people and near starvation on the long bus ride. They camped out and were assaulted by the worst storm I have seen in ages. They allowed us to awaken them, once they finally got to sleep; and drag them out on the river, where they were subjected to all sorts of creepy critters.
During this ordeal, they managed to keep sterling, positive attitudes. Never once, did they complain (well maybe just once). They were determined to have a good time. We sure did, and I hope they did too. Chris and Crystal are incredibly cool and unique people and I'm so glad they made it up here!
They arrived tired and hungry at the bus stop in Vero Beach around 1:00 pm on Saturday. After lunch we went to McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach (Thanks Grayce for the suggestion). Next we went to Oslo Riverfront Conservation Area (Thanks again Grayce), where we followed a lush trail flanked with ferns and thick vegetation to the wetlands. We saw snakes, butterflies and something that was either a large, black lizard or a skunk ape (depending on whether you ask me or Chris). We did make it to the observation tower, but the birds were too far away to photograph. It was a beautiful place, and we had a wonderful time.
Hunger overtook us, once again, and we headed to Sebastian. Chris and Crystal set up their tent at the campground, we went to the grocery store and then had a raucous cookout at my place (Much alcohol was consumed). I can never make them mad at me, because we all know way too much about each other now;)
I took them back to the campground around 1:00 am. They got to sleep at around 2:00 and the lightning, hail and rain started at 5:00 (exactly when AJ predicted). I finally rescued them around 8:00 and brought them back to our place; where they got a couple more hours of sleep before we shoved some coffee and bagels at them and dragged them to the river. Instead of kayaks we went out in our little boat. It's the perfect size for four people.
Overall, I didn't get many good shots; but I had a great time meeting Chris and Crystal. Wish we could have had a bigger GTG, but we certainly made the best of the circumstances.
Here are some of the photos:
Jutilda is quick. She's already noticed Chris's gorgeous blue eyes and devilish smirk, and I haven't even finished uploading the pix! See comments. Thanks Jutilda.

Good job on recapping the events Roxanne. I know you were a wonderful host. The pics are nice. I hope you'll return to ORCA. There are some plans for expansion. They have occasional talks too, if you're interested.
I regularly go to McKee. Btw, there's another botanical garden in Fort Pierce. It's different, but nice. No ponds, but a nice herb garden and some other features. Heathcote Botanical Garden
