May 13th on Cumberland is perfect. Its the weekend after my most recent college graduation. Let's set that date, stir up interest, and make this happen. Who's in?

Count me in. Sounds fun.

Rex,

I used to live in Warner Robins and have made the trip to Cumberland in a little over three hours using back roads. This was in the late 80's (cough) though and I don't know how much the roads have changed since.

Just checked out the website, and I think that we will camp for he weekend. Making reservations tomorrow. Here is there contact site if interested:

Maybe there will be a beach challenge that week that I can suck in.

I used to go camping there when I was in the Boy Scouts. Sea Camp is great. All of the camp sites are located under a canopy of live oaks. From the beach you can't even tell there is camping. If it is still the same from when I was there last, be prepared to hike in everything you are bringing. It's over a mile (possibly 2 mile) hike to Sea Camp. I am really looking forward to this trip.

Disclaimer: The last time I was at Cumberland Island was over 20 years ago. Things may have changed. :)

I coach kids' soccer, and the last weekend of the season is the 13th. Would the 20th work for you?

---
Oh - and your description of sea camp is still valid. It's down behind two lines of sand dunes and well hidden under some fantastic live oaks.

---

And yes, you do carry in anything you will need. There are a couple of water fountains, but that's it. No stores or supplies.

---
It is about 1.25 hrs north of Jacksonville, or (I'm guessing ) about 45 minutes south of Savannah? That might help you determine how long it would take for you to drive down. The key thing to remember is that the ferry only goes over once in the morning, and it requires reservations. You don't want to be late, or you are out of luck. Period.

----
There is an Ansel Adams display at the Cummer Art Museum in Jacksonville that will be here through June. There are a lot of other things to see here as well, either for Friday evening or for early Sunday before driving home .

-----

The URL for the park is Cumberland Island National Seashore

-----

I may be out of pocket for the next few days (depending my blackberry's coverage), but I will check in Sunday night to see if folks can make the 20th. If it has to be the 13th, I'm not sure that I can join, but IDNIC / Cindi may be able to act as host.

The 20th works better for me too. I'll be attending my graduation on May 13th...so I won't be taking any pictures that day. =0P

May 20th I must work. I have to work every other Friday, Sat. and Sunday.

How about May 27th?

But if you all want the 20th then I will sit it out!

I've spent a good portion of my life in that area, as I have a house on the private portion of Cumberland Island at the tip (Little Cumberland Island). I have a whole gallery of (low quality) pictures @ www.achelton.myphotoalbum.com. Also, some of my challenge entries have been taken there (Calm). Cumberland Island is my favorite place in the world to be, and I would never pass up a chance to go there.

Even if I can not make it, it would be a good idea to PM me or something because I can let you know the best places to go on the public portion, as Arisken
and Perfection recently took a 30 mile hiking trip around the whole island.

Once again I encourage anyone to make the effort to set foot on this pristine environment -- you won't regret it.
