BEFORE I BEGIN THIS THREAD, I HAVE TO VERY LOUDLY SAY TO THE WHOLE WORLD WIDE WEB, I AM NOT PERFECT!
In recent threads over the last few months we have had members try to define what a good comment was. What a good critique was. What a good scoring system is. How to score. Why 1's are given. What a troll is.
And finally a revamp of forum rules. Do's and Don'ts.
I finally was given opportunity to try something.
Praise.
Two threads that I started on members that commented on my submissions in two differant challenges. Praising them for their comments.
One member I qualified as helpful in their comment, the other I acknowledged for his rare commenting.
I know some members don't find me very...conforming. I don't come across sometimes as...'nice'.
What ever.
These two threads got very differant reactions from the general population. All I was trying to do is see if praise is something that could be used as a way for others to learn from.
But, the truth is, the one thread turned into a party, the other thread brought out offence to some.
My experiment failed.
I am not perfect, but as a perfectionist, praising others on the WWW was like stuffing a turkey while it was still alive, hard to handle, and not easy.
Thanks for your particapation.
I need a drink.

| I think you should be very happy with yourself for trying something that is hard for you. |

I think doing anything for an audience of this size is going to get considerably mixed results. Being on the Site Council has certainly been an exercise in understanding that. For every for, there's an against.
But I'm sure that both of the people you chose to praise appreciated it and really, that's all that matters. And maybe you inspired a few more to comment.
And man, I'm with you on the drink thing this morning. |

I thought that was a nice gesture on your part, and I'm sure it was appreciated by the Commenters.

The only way to 'control' a thread is to request it to be locked after you submit your first post. :-)
I actually got quite a kick out of the Pedro thread...it made me laugh out loud a few times. Although the sincerity/seriousness of your original post may not have been carried out with every response, I still think it was worthwhile for you to post the original.
It's like Whispering Down the Lane...you start with one thoughtful and sincere statement, and by the end, Pedro is scissor kicking Angela Lansbury - because she had it coming!
:)
Just the nature of the web, I guess...
It's all (at least, should be) in fun.

There is no failure...unless you choose to not continue in your quest.
And why such harsh terms like "failed"?
Just because a few hooligans (like myself) had a little fun and misdirected your thread, doesn't necessarily mean that hundreds of other readers 'missed the point'.
In fact, maybe your original thread has inspired many others to comment more...and with more thought. If that's the case, then your experiment would be a resounding success.
But how would you gauge that success?
Metrics?
Every person responding to your original thread with a 'Hear, hear!!' ?
That's a tough thing to measure...
That being said, maybe I'm missing the point.

Pedro appreciated the thread...but was waiting for the punchline. I was certain i was being punk'd. :)
most likely it's because we're so used to the negative crap and net-rages that something to the contrary was confusing. like shiny objects do to goldfish. and me for that matter.
Thanks AH

My only issue with your praising of 1 commentor out of many who commented on your entry is that not everyone has the confidence to comment in a mini critique kind of way as it appeared that you prefer or felt was worthy.
IMHO While you praised 1 you discouraged many from commenting because now their "I love it" style of comment is seen to not be worthy.
That's a shame because those people grow with confidence and would add more to their comments over time.

I feel that if someone writes even a single word as comment (may it be negative), it shall be appreciated. Because the person at least spent sometime with you picture. Its far better than people who just run through the images and finish 'the job' of voting.
Sometimes for a commentor it is not easy to write something techincal. Like for example i am almost illiterate when it comes to photography, so all my comments will be praising the composition or how it felt to my eyes. So just because I comment 'wonderful' or 'awful' someone says that he does not value this comment is truely hurtful. This is why you will see lot of drop in commenting, why bother to even write a single word if the photog doesn't appreciate. |

zxaar and all others who feel they can only give a 1 or few words comment! Please note that in the vast majority of cases that comment is very highly regarded and you will note that again in the majority of cases people have ticked the helpfull box as our way of saying thankyou!
I have 4 entries going at the moment with only 3 comments with one entry having 2 of those comments. That's sad.
So to all the long and short commentors keep it up, I love getting them and its a great way to learn to truly look at an image!
