Hello all,
me again, I have a little query, I am looking to move from a PC to a Apple IMAC Stats below:-
20-inch widescreen LCD with 1680x1050 resolution
2.0GHz Intel Core Duo with 2MB shared L2 cache
512MB (single SO-DIMM) 667MHz DDR2 SDRAM
250GB Serial ATA hard drive
Slot-load 8x double-layer SuperDrive
ATI Radeon X1600 graphics with 128MB GDDR3 memory
Built-in AirPort Extreme and Bluetooth 2.0

Looking to get the RAM upgraded to 1Gb with wireless keyboard and mouse

Now as i am in Ireland if i buy from Apple.ie i get ripped off big time. So after looking around i am going to buy from B&H Photo in NYC. I have purchased lens from them before and can mark items as a gift and such evaid any import tax etc...

Question being can i just buy a Plug convertor to change from a US plug to an UK/Irish 3 pin plug and away i go? The power in the IMAC is as follows "Line voltage: 100-240V AC" as far as i can see a convertor or new cable would do the trick?

Any ideas at all would be helpfuly. BTW the saving on this would be in the region of 700euros, not bad at all :-)

I would get at least 2 gig of ram. Not sure about the voltage.

A converter should work fine. Just make sure you check for a voltage switch before you plug it in. Some Macs have a physical 120/220v switch.

thanks guys, might look into the 2gb of ram?

More RAM is always preferable, particularly if you're running a non-Universal Binary version of Photoshop (the only kind available at the moment). If you're just running iPhoto or other native software, 1gb is plenty.

Hi there.. I have the very same machine it is 100V - 240V, I got mine in Japan and bought it here to UK with me. great machine.. I have 1.5GB RAM its fine, but Macs like RAM so if you can afford 2GB get it. the rest is just Belt up relax and enjoy the ride.

No regrets here when I switched from windows... different world

Edit to say.. I just cut the Japanese plug off and wired a UK plug myself, worked fine

You can run a PC version of Photoshop while you wait for the universal version :-)

//www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/

Apple released a Windows boot utility to officially allow you to run Windows XP on an intel-mac.

To think of it i need a new graphocs tablet also.

this is getting expensive now

Thats a scarey thought. what's the point?

Her are two topical links you may find helpful:

This one and

this one.

Just a quick check to ensure that it's OK for 50/60 Hz and you should be all right if the voltage input range is, as you say, 100-240. Just cut off the plug and put a new 13A one on.

If I wanted to run Windows I wouldn't have bought a Mac.

I am currently using a MacBookPro (Intel DuoCore processor) with 1gig of Ram. I am a graphic Designer and Photographer by trade, using the entire Adobe Creative Suite and Quark.

I have worked on files as big as 2 gig size (a 40"x40" poster for a client) and expereinced no slow down whatsoever. I also had Quark open at the same time. Unless your doing some serious projects you don't need more than 1 gig imho.

I have an iMac G5, and I'd love to be able to run some windows-only freeware or games that just aren't available on a Mac.

It is always good to have more than one tool in the toolbox.

PS - I hope we haven't hijacked Brookied's thread. Sorry

The point is it will seriously increase Apple's sales.

Being able to boot into windows to play games or use software that is PC only will be fantastic!!

I'll be getting the 2.16 Macbookpro with 2 gig of ram next week. And being able to play BF2 will be a dream...

Well feel sorry for me then, cuz I will be doing it. The ability to boot into 2 different OS's is fantastic.

Mac users have been able to run PC software since about Mac OS 8/Windows 3.11 using emulation software (e.g. VirtualPC), though if this will actually boot the machine into Windows directly that would be a significant improvement.

I've never understood why Apple, once they re-designed the OS based on UNIX, didn't just make a version (Mac Lite) which would just run on any off-the-shelf WinTel box, and lacking some features of the "full" version designed to take advantage of Mac hardware.

just wanted to say I did the exact same thing a couple of months ago with the exact same computer iMac and haven't look back since. fantastic. I didn't even upgrade the RAM and find it to work just fine for my extensive editing and use. Good choice I think.
