got my 30D an hour or so ago...I like it!
I got spot metering back! And lots of other neat features too.

The left is center weighted evaluative metering, the middle is spot metering to the left of the upper lip, the right is spot metering on the right of hte upper lip.

The difference to my eye is great, i like the last one best. The difference to the camera is 1/10 of a second shutter speed.
Subtle, yes, but then that's often what makes one photo great and another only good.

Yes, they all say it's not the camera, it's the photographer, but then, you are only as good as your tools!

Gonna go read the book...in the mean time, my 300D will be around for weddings and backup, and it did get a last day out at the Zoo on Sunday..here's a pic from that:

Nice! I'm sure you'll have a lot of fun with it. The first spot picture is more 'correct' of an exposure because the white of her shirt is rendered closer to white than in the other picture, but I'm sure it's cool to be able to specify that with a smaller point.

My first day with it, a couple of shots, first one spot-metered:

The control is nice - like the spot one and two shots - i moved the 'spot' and adjusted teh exposure. I get teh skin tone i want, not some overall ideal the camera thinks is what I want. This is ezpecially handy in backlit situations or where you ahve a nasty hot spot - you can meter off the hot spot and not blow things out. I have not tried it on shadows or see what it might do with flash.

I like consistency in my shots and the Rebel is purely evaluative and hat can change from shot to shot as you recompose or the subject moves. annoying at times.
