I just went to see the 25th anniversary tour of 45 Grave. It was great. They played with two of my favorite bands from the 80's, DI and Battalion of Saints. I'm glad the 80's bands are not dieing but still have grace and dignity. |

I propose 2 rules for rock bands :-
1) If your over 30 you are ban from performing in a "rock" band.
2) An exception is made only to those who cannot honestly remember their name due to the drug haze (Ozzie and alike) but on NO account can they be older than 40 (they will obviously look like 70 something but I mean based on some proof).
Enough already with these comeback tours. It's just wrong to wheel the walker up on stage no matter who you were.
-> Steps into a fire proof suit.... |

Umm, your idea about being over 30 and not being allowed to rock, well, as far as I'm concerned that's just nonsense.
If your band can still sell out arenas, then whatever you do is OK. If, on the other hand, you used to sell out arenas, but your latest tour involves playing at a county fair, you should really consider giving it up.

Sort of ironic the rock which was all about youth when it arrived on the scene in the 1950's, is more than a little grey at the temples. Way back Neil Young sang that it was "better to burn out than it is to rust", but anyone who saw Jonathan Demme's film "Heart of Gold" knows that there is a third option.
Yes, second rate talent like second rate wine or automobiles had better be consumed quickly because they fade and rot. However a '66 Petrus or a Ferrari Dino 206 can not be lumped into the same grouping as most of the crap that is put on the mass market. Not only do they not have a sell by date, they are better now than they were then. Look down the list of the current Billboard 100 and there are 4 or 6 names that will stand the test of time, Mary J Bilge ect.
Way back when I was going to concerts and cared about what was on the radio, the 50's rock was what the 80's is to mass market radio today, safe pablum for the middling radio programmer, but there where great songs amid the dross. The fact that the great bands of the 80's get less play than the second rate ones is sad but predicable. The 80's spawned Rap, Punk, Death Metal, and Electronica, and frankly there has been nothing new under the sun since.
Other than Emo, can you name a gendre that dosen't come out of the 80s or before?

Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper, The Kingston Trio, Peter/Paul&Mary, Buffy Saint-Marie, Joan Baez, Judy Collins -- these are the names that will never die (even though some of them no longer represent living people).
Now, how many of you young whipper-snappers can identify with (or even remember) them?!!!
Long live the 50s/60s!!!
(yeah, I know: "Go away, old man!")

But this is the time for the '80s bands to rake it in. The Bon Jovi fan who earned money flipping burgers in high school and could hardly afford a $22 ticket is now a white collar middle manager who can pay $75 a ticket.
This is clearly why bands like the Rolling Stones, Sting, etc. can command such high prices. Their fans are in their 30s to 50s and earn quite a bit more money. |

Funny I heard "Soldier Blue" By Buffy St Marie only yesterday and it gave me a nostalgia trip!
I grew up listening to Hank Williams, Buddy, Gene Vincent, Eddie Corchoran (never could spell it!) as my older brothers were really into music and then moved on to the 60's bands, rock bands like Deep Purple, Cream, Stones, Who,Queen, Zepplin, and of course the Beatles.
My brother is now 58 and his rock band Lynx 4 is still performing in clubs and gigs in the UK and abroad. We spent last weekend away at one of their gigs and had a tremendous time.
:)
(I know - go away old girl!)

Sometime in 1983, I think... It was totally unreal. |
Hehe--One of my all-time favorite concerts ever was Queensryche with ST opening for them--awesome!! That was on Queensryche's "Empire" tour where they performed "Operation Mindcrime" in it's entirety. Those were the days...
And if you saw Pink Floyd live--I hate you. :o) If I could see ANY band play live, it would be them (not that it's ever going to happen). |

My wife LOVES the 80's! You can say 3 words from just about any 80's song and she'll tell you the title, band, album, year released, etc. Not suprisingly, as I just realized, most of the concerts that I've been to have been with her, and most of them 80's bands (or at least for part of their careers). I know I'm forgetting some here: The Go Go's, B-52's, Social D, Chicago (twice), Aerosmith, Phil Collins, and I even braved through a Rick Springfield/Air Supply concert for her. She wanted to go a couple years later to see Rick again, and I politely told her to take a girlfriend. We also saw Van Halen about a year ago, but that was my choice. |

Fashion runs in 20 year cycles. If you wore it last time, you're too old to wear it next time! lol |
That's what really made me feel old- when that first cycle of the 80's ripped shirts and pat benitar striped shirts came around again and I said I could never wear that again!!! Although I must admit I still wear my converse. Can't get out of that habbit :0)
My first concert was Huey Lewis & the news. How much more 80's can you get!!!! incidentially my hubby was at the same show! LOL

Weren't they both on General Hospital, the soap opera of the 80's?
Blacky and Dr. Whatshisname respectively.
I think my first concert was Rod Stewart, haven't seen him mentioned but he's still going strong, appealling to an even older generation now. Incidently my last concert was Green Day, I wonder what they'll be doing in 20 years, maybe on permanent Holiday lol. |

I went to see Tom Jones a couple of months ago and he was awesome!!
I'm not really that keen on his music, but he put on a great show.
I've never seen so many old people with walkers, electric wheelchairs and oxygen bottles (I'm not joking!!!!) in one place; other than a hospital.
And I nearly got kicked out for trying to pictures!!!

As of a week or two ago, I believe it's Sir Tom Jones (he was knighted).
HaHaHa ... does that mean he's now a member of the Knights of the Round Turntable?

Speaking of which, I saw Peter Gabriel back in '86 on the "So" tour (AMAZING show). I found out many years later that my wife was at the same show. I was a Junior in highschool, and she was finshing college (she's 6 years older than I am). Who knows? We may have bumped into each other and not even known it. Weird. |

Great thread!!
I graduated in '84, but I know all those names, and most of the others on this thread! :P~~~
Luckily I grew up in a family that loves to listen to music.
At any time there could be playing anything from Opera all the way to Metal!
And can I just say... have been to 2 Neil Diamond concerts since high school. I don't care how old that man gets... when he gets up on the stage and starts singing..... woooo baby!
But yes... I'd go down in a blaze of heaven with Jon! :D |
