Is it bad of me to only check the "this comment was helpful" box when it was actually helpful? I know some people check it for all comments, and I personally think that's not right; just because, if it's doesn't give ways to improve your image, or things they like about it in particular, instead of "Cool shot", it's not helpful--right?

Just a question from someone who is still trying to figure this site out completely, you know, the "unwritten rules" and what-not.

I think it is a matter of perspective. I tend to check all of them (when I remember) simply because while "cool shot" doesn't tell me a lot, it does tell me that someone, somewhere liked the picture for some reason, and that is helpful in someways, to me.

Everyone is different, and most everyone can defend their methods.

So--just to clarify it--there isn't some "unwritten rule" around here that you should check them all?

I've only once ever deliberately not checked a comment as helpful.
It wasn't because I didn't like the comment (that person was entitiled to their opinion), but it was because I looked at the other comments that person had left and they were all equally as "stupid" and inane.

Otherwise, as Karmat said, they are usually all helpful in some kind of way.

Do what works best for you. I check them all because I like to acknowledge that I've read it and I really don't want to evaluate whether a comment is helpful or not.

For me any comment is a good comment, unless someone is just being an ass to be an ass.

While 'nice' and 'cool shot' are really not much of anything, I'd likely mark these helpful as a matter of courtesy, unless of course, the image was intended and clearly achieved the very opposite effect.

If a comment clearly demonstrated gross negligence of the facts presented by the picture or if it were, otherwise, lacking in manner and/or tone, I might choose not to acknowledge a use.

Some comments demonstrate no interest in the image in favour of an unqualified condemnation: 'DNMC'. These will not harvest a 'helpful' check, particularly when intolerant of interpretations other than the one given.

Some comments exceed the usual quality of comments we have become accustomed to here. I wish there was a way to acknowledge these.

Having a comment check "Helpful" usually makes the person comment more, especially if they know that the other person is actually reading the comment that is given.

Can I vent here - just a little bit?

I leave comments every once in a while. I don't go religiously and leave comments on every photo. But when I do, I try to convey my thoughts at the moment when I looked at the image, sometimes the first time, and more often on a second run-through the challenge.

There are people that mark all comments helpful. Then there are people that mark nothing as helpful. All these I understand.

However, what I do not understand is when I see my comment in the middle of 10-15 comments, majority marked as helpful, (mostly praise) and mine was not - because I gave reason why I did not consider the image to be "amazing" or "great", at the same time giving a suggestion on how to make it better, sometimes recommending recomposing of the existing image by a different crop, and sometimes a different angle of shooting that would require retake of an image.

And these images did not end up scoring 6.x or 7.x, so there had to be something not "great" or "amazing" in them.

Again, some people probably only need to have a pat on the back, and are not really looking for suggestions on how to improve their photography.

I appreciate and love comments. maybe you should comment on mine, since I take negative criticism quote openly. Been in the slumps lately so there are just older submissions or portfolio entries. Thanks
