when it comes to zoom lenses? Internal zoom or zooms that change the length of the lens(external I guess)
I'm looking to buy this lens:
Sigma Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto 28-70mm f/2.8 EX DG Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS
or
Tamron Zoom Wide Angle-Telephoto AF 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di LD Aspherical (IF) Autofocus Lens for Canon EOS.
I know everybody that has the Tamron loves it.
Any comments from the people who own the Sigma?

I'm almost positive that whether or not the zoom alters the length of the lens is not the only difference between those two... but I do like lenses where the length doesn't change. The zooming on the Tamron I can live with, its' Canon counterpart might have internal zoom and some other stuff but it's also like $800 more.
The Tamron is a sure choice for an awesome lens. I think image-wise it's better than my 50 1.8 when stopped down a bit. I still like the 50 for the shallow DOF effect though. |

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 is IMO the best way to go. I purchased one a month or so back and love it.

The Sigma has internal zoom. There are some differences between the two.
The F Stop range on the Tamron is 2.8-32. The Sigma is 2.8-22.
Magnification has a slight difference. Tamron is 1:3.9 where the the Sigma is 1:4.4
Angle of view for the Tamron is 75-32, the Sigma is 75-34.
Also the groups/elements are different. Tamron is 14/16 and the Sigma is 12/14.
The zoom is longer on the Tamron by 5mm and the Sigma is $50 cheaper. Not that cost matters.

Fred Miranda has reviews of these lenses at their site.
Tamron
Sigma
It is interesting to note that there are 123 reviews for the Tamron vs only 18 reviews for the Sigma. That alone speaks volumes.
Good luck in your choice. |
