I have some dust on my sensor. I called the shop I bought it at to use my warranty to have them clean it, they said that I should just buy a brush/blower and clean it myself. they said just use the mirror lockup feature and give it a cleaning.
I asked my friend who is a professional photographer and he said that I should under no circumstance try to clean the sensor. He said that if I don't follow a specific order of operations, I run the risk of ruining my sensor.
His exact words were,
"Do you have a warranty?"
"Yes I do",
"Let me know how it goes."
What do you think? |

I have no knowledge at all about cleaning sensors, so my advice isn't worth much if anything, but I'd call the store again and tell them that this type of thing is why you have a warranty!

Firstly, I don't think warranties cover dust anyway. Secondly, you can clean the sensor yourself if you are very careful and follow the directions precisely. Have a look at cooperhill.com. I am still a bit afraid of sensor cleaning so I drop mine at a certified canon service center a couple of times a year and let them do the cleaning.
Edit to mention: dust spots are not a service issue, so the store is definitely not responsible. Its about cleaning and is something you will need to do regularly as long as you own SLRs

| My warranty would cover service, I just don't want to be w/o camera for 3 weeks, especially because the weather here in Vermont is finally getting nice. |

I clean mine with copper hill cleaning - works like a charm.
Just don't go in heavy-handed and all will be well. |

I gotta' ask, where in VT are you able to get service like that? I grew up in Rutland, and I don't know of anywhere nearby that offers it.
But back on topic - if the warranty covers it, I'd let them do it. And it certainly shouldn't take weeks. A couple of days, at most, would be reasonible. If you do opt to do it yourself, there are tutorials around, and the copperhill system is said to be the best. I haven't tried it, scared to myself, but I know there are folks around here that are comfortable with it, so it can't be too hard.

If you are not confident cleaning it yourself, your local camera shop should clean it for $30-$50.
Dust would probably not be covered under warranty as every camera gets it.

I bought the copper hill gear recently , and have had one go at it the other day.
I improved the situation a lot, even though I didn't get it 100% clean.
At least I didn't ruin it, and perhaps next time I'll do even better.
It is awkward and it worried me, but it isn't brain surgery.
Follow the instructions and you'll be fine. |

| I have an extended warranty which is said to cover cleaning. However, like others, I don't want to be without my camera for 3 weeks. So I have used the Sensor Brush on numerous occasions to clean my sensor and have never had a problem. |

I am in Burlington (right outside), Ritz camera is where I got my XT, pretty much bought it there only because I could finance it for 0%. They offer pretty good extended warranties, mine is 2 years, and they will cover everything, even water damage.
At least thats what it says, ask me if it actually covered anything once I need to use it.
By the way, service would be covered, but they don't do it in store, they send it away so I would be cameraless for about 3 weeks. I will do that once I get to 12,000 shots. |

There's also this method, which was mentioned here at DPC a little while ago. (The link I provided here is also at the end of the article from alfresco's post above.)
