Who you've only previously known online, do you find yourself calling them by their 'real' name, or by their 'online' name more often?

I haven't met anyone on DPC yet (with the exception of my roommate, who obviously I've known before we were both on DPC) but there have been plenty of other times when I've met up with online friends in the real world, and more often than not we refer to each other via screen names/forum handles, etc.

Just a curiosity.

And also, I need to meet DPC people in the flesh someday :o

Blast you, Art!! You made me spray a sodden lump of well-masticated nacho chips, salsa and sour cream onto my monitor. I can't even clean it off again... cuz I don't do Windows... ;)

*peering around the monitor mess*... Okay, ON-thread now...

There's one local group I used to chat with online that also had regular coffee-meets and that group usually used screennames for each other. My nick was Mom because my daughter chatted there too and one of the members bought me a button that said, "Mom isn't my real name." Some of them still call me that 10 years later! But when I get to know others one-on-one it's usually real names. It always helps when their online nicks are the same as their real-life ones, of course :)

WHAT are the odds of all the users on the internet, you would run into no less than FIVE members of your family??? Amazing! That's like .000006 degrees of separation or something. ;-)

I've always called him as "Bob" since it's easier on the tongue :p

I know plenty of people I've met online, most of them use there real name online but some use different names.

one of my friend I met online 10 years ago and I only know today as a real person not an internet buddy, I find myself still using her online nick when I talk to her...

my online name is DanSig wich is short for Daniel Sigurdsson and people call me Dansig all the time...

for the record:

MOH-jeh-thonk.

Although when I play online games that involve voice comm, I get 'mod' and 'modge' a lot. And once, on a German server, I got a really kick-ass sounding pronouciation...I can't really phonetically type it out, though.

Flounder? Hmmm...it's not like 'ROFLMAO' is that easy to pronounce, either XP "rah-fel-maoh"...

Well, Moe Jah Than'ick, if I meet you in person, I will call you "Aitch"...and you may call me "Kay Dee" if you ever get about.

I think I would never call smilebig4me1x "Smile big for me one time"...but that would certainly depend upon her preference.....some folks' users names just don't "fit" in person. Some do. Some are simply interchangable (for various reasons)....whatever they answer to.
=)

I actually go by dave or dp...so either way works for me.

When I meet people, I'm always asking them what their online name is though...but i usually call them by their real name if i can remember it

You know.. most people's usernames, I just kinda read and don't think about it... Like for for example.. with deapee, my mind says DP and for GeneralE, that's exactly how I "hear" it. So when I read yours, I always say to myself, Art Rah-fla-mayo (to give a strange phonetic spelling).

And to Gurilla.. I call people by their names. I know some who don't. My name is Andrea, but one lady in my book club still calls me Vanissa, which was my username in the online version of our group. And I've been a member since like 2002. :)

Strangely, I do the same when reading his name.

Not me. Too many years in chat rooms as a youngster has me constantly thinking Art "Rolling on the floor laughing my a.. off" when I see his name. My mind doesn't even think to try and pronounce the acronym.

Needless to say, it takes me awhile to get started with any of his posts..

For the record, I pronounce it "Rahf La MAU" Like the Frech version of that former Chinese leader, but with an almost German first name. I consider myself quite cosmopolitan. :)

Haven't met anybody here but if I did my actual name and online name are easy to pronounce. Either would be fine just don't call me Shirley. :P
