Do you guys get thumbnails of the 30D CR2 files?

My Rebel XT's .CR2s are showing thumbnails, the 30D's aren't. Do you guys know if Microsoft needs an update to thumbnail the 30D's? Or am is it just me?

if it's an MS update, anybody got the link?

Thank

A gentle *bump* for those who may know something about this...

But also, just wanted to make sure that it's not something simple, like not having the Thumbnail option selected in the file manager for the folder you have your 30D files in (go to View -> Thumbnail while you have that folder open for this). It's not that, right?

Why and how ARE the RAW files different from say the 20D to the 30D?
They even have the same file extension!

I've seen some posts about the Adobe Camera RAW not working with the 30D's files yet either - Canon must have tweaked the format a little, they'll probably get around to updating the programs soon.

I don't get thumbnails on RAW shots from my 20D. Never have. Must open them in DigitalPhotoPro to see anything.

I got to try a 5D this week and a 1Ds...
the 5D files don't come up in Explorer as thumbnails either.

Try the following:

//www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/digitalphotography/prophoto/raw.mspx

Works great.

Do you have the RAW viewer from Microsoft? I love that little program and it works just fine with the 20D.

I'm not an expert, but my understanding is that even though the filetype may be the same for the various Canon or Nikon models, each camera records things a little differently, so the computer needs to know the specs for the camera to be able to interpret the file, so you need to be sure your version of Microsoft RAW Image Viewer, Photoshop plugins, etc supports your specific camera model.

Canon and Nikon both tweak their RAW format with each new camera. It's always necessary, it's just the way it is. Nikon went as far as to "encrypt" white balance to throw off 3rd party developers. Both companies look at developers of 3rd-party RAW coverters as "competition," and that pretty much guarantees that there will be constant changes, and delays as the 3rd party converters "catch up". If Canon & Nikon had any sense, they'd release the specs to developers prior to the camera release so that hardware and software could be released concurrently. Better yet, if they'd support something like DNG, we'd all be better off.

Most RAW converters don't work simply because they see the camera entry as "30D" and don't know what it is, so they don't try!

There's a script to hack 30D support into Adobe Camera Raw here. I did the same thing using a hex editor and it works fine.

I believe the latest Breezebrowser has 30D support already, the others will no doubt catch up soon.
