Normally I know when a photo of mine is going to get a really low score. But this week I thought my "Leading Lines" photo seemed about as good as any of the others I've submitted recently that have scored 5.5 or over.
After 17 votes it's on 3.5882, and no comments!
I just wish someone would post a comment so I could know why on earth it's scoring this low. It has some of my usual problems, eg. the focus is a bit soft, but nothing else about it is particularly weird or "out there". I can only imagine that people aren't seeing my leading lines, so they don't think it meets the challenge :/. |

I was about to start a rant about this, I think that something really wierd is happening with the scoring! The votes, particularly in the open challenges, seem to be incredibly low. To me it is unbelievable that 7th place scored only 6.2, for example! I don't think that the quality of pictures has gone down but I do think that the quality of voting has gone down! Some people have voting averages of under 3, how can this be?! Lisae, I hope that yours goes up soon and you get some comments!

lisea, I am commenting on all of them and I hope you and everyone else does to, because I am having the same problem. Except I knew mine would score low.

I entered both challenges this week. The photo I thought would bomb is in the high 5 range and the one I thought was great is barely breaking 4. Go figure?

I was right! Someone finally left a comment, and they say they're not sure if the photo meets the challenge. So that's what it is!! They can't see my lines.
And now it's on 3.5. |

My picture for the egg challenge is doing just under 5. Can't believe it myself.
As Natasha pointed out, I've also noticed that the scores, most noticeably in the open challenges, are lower in average. Open challenges are practically not getting any 7's. I've seen a lot of open pictures with lower scores than higher rated but undeserving member pictures.

Dammit! I know I must be coming last, or close to it. I don't want to have to wait a week before I can explain to everyone where my leading lines are. I can't believe they're that difficult to see.
It's one of those moments when I wish there was a way to unsubmit your photo during the challenge. I just don't want a photo I like this much to get my lowest ever score :(. |

Just admit you took it a month ago and get a DQ. Problem solved. Sorry, just trying to lighten the mood a little *runs away and hides*.

As they say in the subtitles of samurai movies, buck up! It is possible that my Egg entry will qualify for our dormant "bad picture" side challenge, except I may have straightened it too much, and it might be too funny. But I think it will be my lowest-scoring photo since my first.
We haven't had one of those "I can't believe this photo scored so low" Rants for a while -- I'll be happy to start one for your photo on Sunday. |

i am very disheartened by the votes on my egg photo. i just knew it would do well! it made me say "wow!" when i saw it on my computer screen. sheesh! last night it was at 7...now it's at 5. i knew my leading lines photo wouldn't do well and it's not...but i really thought this egg photo was a good one.
oh well...c'est la vie!

I understand the "flabbergasted," part you speak of, especially with voting count. I am getting into this uncontrollable thing with always looking at my commentors profile. I like to know where it is coming from, and who they are (since tough to meet face to face). The bad part about it is, I look at their avg. vote cast, and am astonished that someones average could be below a 5!! I know people like and hate things and vote according to that. But according to the law of averages shouldn't a 5 come up...or close to it. Especially after casting over 2000+ votes? to me that means these people need to rethink how they judge.
Also, my members challenge has 5 comments to 25 votes and the open is 1 comment to 60 votes. I know there are more in the open, but.....

i'm a bit flabbergasted myself. i took time on my egg shot.. it's not a "snapshot", it has an egg..it's not out of focus (maybe i'm narrowing it down too much? :P ), and i was pretty proud overall of it. 56 votes and 4.6 average, no comments. I'm at a loss as to whats wrong with my photo at this point. Now i'm just hoping to get ONE comment on it :) granted with my luck, it'll be from someone who scores it an 8 or 9, someone who *doesn't* see something wrong with it... oh well, we'll see as the week goes by :)

I decided to go artistic this time....when will I learn! I have been quite spoiled with decent scores but today I woke up to a 3.something. Now hoovering at 4! I should know by now that artistic is not the way to go here. Short DOF is always just blur, and grainy can never be good....funny I've got to think funny....that's what people here like...
Sorry I had to get it out, now I feel better.

Sorry to disillusion you, but I think "funny" is lurking around 3.2. |

Well it is early in the voting so hopefully our scores will go up. I haven't started yet as I was on the road all day today to come to a 4.0 and a 4.2
I have 3 comments on one of the photos that I delibertly used soft focus with and they say it isn't in focus. No Sh@%! Sorry:( I set that shot up and took over 70 frames yesterday. I figured the lighting was going to be the main comment. Oh well, it's still early in the week right? |

Sorry, Terry, my funny finally got up to 4.5. And it's in focus too! ;)

OK so it's not funny, not artistic, not selective focus(DOF). Will someone please step forward with a good score and tell us what is the trick for the week?
I think it is true that the open contests are scoring lower than when there was only one contest for the week.

________________SORE subject with me.
I love or admire most shots with a shallow DOF. THEY can be more interesting and it's NOT always improtant to show the detail from here to infinity!! I've paid the price TerryGee and feel your pain. AHHHHHHH to vent is good.

Last week I complained about not having a 2-level scoring (artisitic/originality/theme + technique). You can see that people mostly thought that it wouldn't change much if to have another level of score.
Then I think, it's not important if the commenter/voter gives low grades in general as long as it is applied consistantly. Overall, the best picture will still win.
I often gives one to pictures out of focus (and not esthetic) and showing an obvious lack of effort or a real bad shot. I don't give much 10 because for me 10 is the perfection and it is rare. So I mostly range between 3-8. If I compare with what I get, it seems pretty fair. But again, I think that what is wrong is to give a low score to a good picture and then a high score to a bad picture, then it messes the stats but only then. Otherwise, consistancy should balance the results. So don't be sad with your score, it may be good overall.

It's the inconsistency that really gets me. How one photo can get as many 10's as 3's just makes no sense! |
