Anyone have experiences, or things to say about using an off camera flash (not a strobe) like 550ex or 580ex for canon as a studio flash.. shot into an umbrella, or through a softbox?.. maybe with 1 or 2 or more flashes?

Does anyone know how to compare the light output of a camera flash and a strobe?

I use a sb800 as a kicker or precise fill all of the time
the nice thing about it is that it will slave on my photogenics and dial down to 1/128 power so it can add just enough into a shadow area.
