So I have my first paying photo shoot this weekend, for a local band. I'm really nervous, since I've never done anything quite like this before (I've done a couple for a doggie day care but they weren't set-up or anything, it was just shooting a few hundred pics of their dogs at play and their equipment and stuff.)
What questions do you ask clients before you start? I'm not sure how exactly to approach it either. What sort of shots would you guys aim to get? It's a classic rock band, and it won't be during a gig or anything so it's pretty much up to me how it all goes down.
Advice? Pretty please? :)

You most definitely want to know what the images will be used for. Is it a website where they want pics of each individual member for a bio section, something with the whole group for a CD cover, something with a specific theme for an upcoming event, etc. |

Where will they be set up? If you can, get them out of their garage and into a cool spot.
Shoot them looking right into the lens. Shoot them ignoring the camera. Shoot them playing to the camera. Tell them to ham it up. Tell them to tone it down.
Ask them what their favorite songs are, and shoot them while they play those. Ask them what they want to use the images for -- you'd probably shoot a series of 11x14's for their livingroom different than publicity photos, different than album cover shots.
Ask them to show you shots of other bands that they like, or that convey the style that they're looking for. Buy a magazine that caters to bands like them (or people with their style), and emulate what you see. Buy a Rolling Stone, and look at the photos. Go look at rock albums at a music store. Google "favorite band photo" or "greatest album covers of all time", see what it references.
Just a thought. |

Thanks so much. :) I'm coming up with a list of questions to get started with now. :) |
