I was doing a still life shot today that I'm supposed to put in my portfolio, it's really important that my shot is flawless ( I know there's no such thing) since this image and a few other combined are my final scores for graduation in photography.
I was hoping for some critique from the "pro" photographers here, those with experience in studio setups and still life shots.
this is the image..still life
I linked to the image on my server as it does not do it justice to be 640 pixels wide.

Overall the lighting looks very good and is lit nicely and evenly across the frame. Detail is great and focus is sharp.
I have one issue with the photo that takes away from the "flawless" you are looking for. That's the glare on the the wine bottle. The glare may be ok if it weren't centered on the bottle and more to one side like on the glasses.
The glare on the glasses seems to have purpose, while the glare on the bottle seems accidental.

yeah, it's nice.
why a single light setup?
nice comp, great texture, light nice, whites on the fringe of being blown, blacks good, black fabric (douvatine?? visquine??) should be less noticeable, dof falls off nicely, color good, nice flow, black bg with this type of lighting should be even, sharp, overall a pleasing "greeting card" type pix.

you've got what you've got in terms of equipment, but a softbox would create better catchlights than the obvious umbrella in your wine glass...maybe alter your settings a bit and shoot through a stretched out white sheet
the jelly bean things are a bit distracting since they all are reflecting a lot of light...perhaps replace with rose petals if you're going for something romantic
maybe use a wine bottle with a darker label. with such a "dark-influenced" image, the bright white really jumps out at me a lot. I'm a bit OCD, so that may be why I also wish the bottle were straightened and had less obvious text on it.
I know this is ultra, ultra picky...normally I'd say it looks great...just tryin' to help out the best as possible! |

The arrangement and perspective are nicely understated and that fits the composition well. Gives it a lot of elegance. You should be very pleased with it. It is a very nicely done image. I do agree with what others previously have said.
A slight distraction for me is the sharp folds in cloth on the lower right side near your signiture. If it were me I would use the smudge or blur tools to "smooth" the folds and take away that bit of harshness. If you do decide to change that I'd further recommend you do it it in the least "destructive" manner possible.

Actually I had 2 lights, there was a big softbox above/in front of the setup and one light with a white umbrella to the right of the setup.
I do agree on the umbrella, I just saw the reflection a few minutes ago, but my fellow students ate my setup this morning, so everything I can fix has to be done in photoshop ;)
edit: fixed some of the suggestions...
