Any Help?

I am $600 away from a macro lens, so I am currently making do with my 18-55 lens and macro filters. Not perfect by any means, but better than nothing.

Im very puzzled by this challenge. I went through the entrants and i reckon i can identify about 85%+ very easily. I thought the object was to take a pic that was difficult to identify.
My entry is at 3.8 just now and i personally think it is really obscure.
Think i will just enter Pretty Pictures from now on..lol

Do you owe someone some money too? :)

The Canon 100mm F2.8 macro lens is the best macro lens I've seen and it can be had for $470 at B&H.

actually for this challenge, some photos are extreme macros. It looks like something but it's not. here's a thought, forget the titles and just look at the image ;) does it meet the challenge? ;)

Challenge words
"Take a picture so close up to something that it cannot easily be identified at first glance."

I keyed on the "cannot be easily identified at first glance" But it can be identified.

I'm getting hammered. I wonder if there is group pressure going on to vote low, because "my score is low too!"

Hope not!!!

I posted this in the abstract scores thread... probably better post here.

I am fairly new to this site, and am seeing a trend that is not pleasing. It seems that in most cases the rules of each challenge do not really apply, and that the voters vote with the "Oh that's shiny" mentality. There are a LOT of GREAT photographers with great submissions, however somtimes I feel that photos are just submitted without much regard to, again, the challenge rules. So for me, I will continue to submit by the rules of the challenge to challenge myself. I will vote accordingly as well. This isn't a "my scores are bad" rant, I accept I have a long way to go. However, the photographers that really submit great photos in a accordance with the rules seem to place in the top 50 and not the top 10.

(should have posted in another thread, oh well)

I guess my image is too abstract. It appears that Abstract does not mean what it means. Oh well. Should have submitted a nice sunset on the beach image. LOL

Different definitions of abstract is going to weigh heavily on the vote on this one. I'm scoring well, and I went with something that at a glance might not look like what it actually is because it's pretty close, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure it out. All three of my comments say it's not very abstract though.

You need to enter a great photo that meets the challenge to score well here. Just meeting the challenge doesn't mean much. I think too many people simply take any old photo meeting the challenge and forget to take a photo that is pretty or interesting or exciting enough to hang on the wall.
My rule of thumb is, if I wouldn't be proud to hang it in my family room I won't submit it. Thus, I don't submit to many challenges :(

edit to add, and my family room walls are bare!

abstract is very "subjective". from my experience with Abstract II, don't expect much comments if it's truly abstract. To each his own you know. What might appeal to some might not appeal to the others.

However, I think that having a purely abstract image might not do so well. It says that it must not be identifiable at first and not identifiable at all.

Some of the abstract macros entered in the challenge needs a lengthier review (more than your average 5 seconds per image). Some of them actually may look like something but they aren't.

Just a thought ;)

I totally agree with a few of you...this challenge was supposed to be abstract/marco. I love taking pictures real close.
I snapped a few pictures of my cats nose (and you could see the texture), it was tough to make him stay still for that photo. But...I discarded it because the photo is easily identifiable at first glance. I snapped a photo of his eyes...and you could see the reflection of the camera. Now...I think that was really a good photo...discarded it because it was not "abstract" enough in my mind, and too easy to identify (actually, I would think it's a bit hard to tell WHAT animal the eye came from).
I snapped a few photos of half eaten Samoas, it looked like some weird space alien attacking, or something of the sort. Photos didn't come out too well..too much shadows and too much highlights.

I ended up choosing a photo that is abstract, and I can guantee that 99% of the people who view the photo will not tell what it is.

My title is :

I still scored pretty low. :-( Oh well. I am not expecting much from my first submission ever, but still, I felt that I met the requirements of the challenge to the fullest.

Hopefully I'll do better next time.

i would probably edit out your title and reference to your entry for anonymity. Most people don't like people mentioning anything that could easily reference their image. Thanks.

I shot this the day before the challenge was announced, otherwise I would've entered this one.

AilurophileDJ, you might not want to post the title of your current challenge photo in the forums. Some people take offense to that and will vote you down.

Also, taking a photo that no one will be able to figure out what it is can be another good way to get a low score.

something that looks like something else that it is not is abtract ..and easly recongnzed.. Just because you recongnize what it represents does not mean it is not abstract

Oh thanks for the comments.
I never posted before...so my bad. A lesson learned. :-)

The way I approached this challenge was to make something truly abstract/macro while composing it in an eye catching way. I also used rule of 3rds and unlike the typical abstract image it isn't so cluttered. There is a definite focus point in mine that leads you through the image. Even with all of that the image is tanking. It started out at 6.2 after the first 10 votes but now it's at 5.1 after 47 votes and no comments. It's becoming painfully obvious why this is. Both this challenge and Hands I didn't use any bright happy colors and they both didn't go well. In the Deja Vu II challenge my entry used bright happy colors (the most I've ever used in an entry) and it just so happens to be my highest scoring photo yet. Go figure.

My comment would be "I don't feel B/W lends itself to an Abstract theme"
What bothered me the most when voting in the current Macro Abstract/Abstract Macro is that there WERE so many in B/W. There were such good concepts and compositions which just lost it for me simply because they were in B/W - colours lend so much to the Abstract idea.

As I just posted, in my view B/W just does not do it for an Abstract. I looked at the entries and said to myself "If it was in an art gallery would I buy it and hang it in my home - as against it is a nice photo"
