I've found that if I take the time to think about and set up a shot, it scores low and/or doesn't really come out as something great. If I go out and take random pictures, I can usually find some that will fit the theme or challenge I'm looking for. It's pretty frustrating spending hours working on a shot, only to have it end up sub-par. Is it a technique thing, or an experience thing, I wonder?
I always have fun setting up shots and everything, but I feel like I'm either copying an idea that's previously been done, or that my idea doesn't have enough "oomph" to be something terrific. I don't just mean for challenge entries.. I mean just totally in-general.
Do you guys find it easier to come up with an idea, plan it out, and shoot it, or do your better images come from spontaneous shots? Where do you guys look for inspiration?

all of my front page on my profile are spontaneous in inspiration, but thought out in composition.

I definitely fare better with setup shots. I can usually imagine more interesting things than I can find locally (although I do try).

i shoot A LOT. i practice all the time. as i rarely have time to plan out a challenge shot, i am usually at the mercy of having something i shot during the week meet up with a challenge description. sometimes i get lucky, sometimes i don't. but, one thing's for sure: the more i shoot, the more likely i'll have something to enter, at least every few weeks or so.

as for inspiration, i just shoot whatever's in front of me as many different ways as possible. for me, it's all about experimenting and learning.
