I, too, chose a "mock suicide" as my theme. The idea was not to shock, it was to communicate what I think "despair" is. When I read the title of despair, it was what naturally came to me. I can't imagine anything more despairing than that.
When I got the comment that I was getting a *1* because that was the theme, but what a good photo it was, I thought that was a bit ridiculous.
But I learned a long time ago that when you post anything for public opinion, you're going to run into people whose viewpoints don̢۪t make any sense to you. I'm certainly not going to be up for any of the top three spots, and there were a couple of shots with the same theme as mine that were even better done, so I gave them high scores and learned from it.
You just let the comments and scores roll off your back – or if they’re constructive, you learn from them and don’t take things personally. Then just be proud of yourself and satisfied that you did the best job you couldâ€Â¦ I wouldn’t change a thing about my submission, I’m quite pleased with it.

i know this has been discussed before, but, i think it would be very helpful to be able to see the photographer's comments during the voting...especially helpful with the challenges that are to convey emotion.

I kind of knew that without some sort of description of why my photo was submitted under despair, people just wouldn't get it.
Que sera sera.
P.S. I also think that rating the mock suicide photos low is ridiculous. If it evokes that strong of an emotion in you, well, isn't that the goal of a challenge like this? |
Matt ! I'm so happy you did join here ! I'll have to look at the photos you've posted ! ~hugs~

just got an average score and everyday i checked my score its getting a higher and higer..well, thanks...as usual...i recived comments that are not so encouraging and they dont understand my image, they sometimes gaves suggestion that are not helpful. that's okay, i ALWAYS RESPECT their opinions. i usually select photos in 3 levels, first..the messages, second...technical aspect, 3rd the visual impact. I DONT gve a score. But, in previous challenge... i recvd 15 10 pts and 12 1pt. see, with that scores you can get an 5+ average. I just hope the voters be fair enough in judging..... |

As a newbie (this is my first entry), I've enjoyed viewing the images and reading these comments. I voted on the images first, and left comments on about half. Now I find myself reviewing and moving them around a little. I have fewer 10s this time round (I did vote on yellow), but I have far more 9s and also far more below 5. For yellow I had lots of 6s, 7s and 8s. This time, I've found myself having a wider spread with a dearth in the middle.
It bugs me just a little that as we rank them from 1 to 10, the little chart says that 1 is "bad" and 10 is "good." I have found good things in all of the photographs I've seen. I can tell that some photographers have great strengths in some areas, and need to work on others. I'm anxious to see comments on my photos over time to see where I need to improve.
I've also noticed that this group has certain biases against certain kinds of photography and toward others. Glitzy, technically demanding photos get high marks here while journalistic stuff, which relies on other artistic skills, gets low marks. I would hope that we could all excel in the type of photography we do best and get votes based on these skills. It seems many of us need education in what a "good" photograph really is. Our votes will always be subjective--which is what makes it art and what makes it so stimulating, but it would be nice to know when blur is good, or when grainy images are good or when accepted rules should be broken or kept to.
Keep up the good work, everybody! |

It is getting harder to do comments on photos because the GRAMMAR POLICE is on Orange alert now :-)

I should have taken a picture of my comment page and submitted it for my despair entry.

going back to what Angg said... I agree with drJones. A staged photo is very communicative while a caged dog may pull on your heart strings it only deals with what YOU feel, but not what you see. you've really got to communicate the feeling the dog is possibly feeling visually. |

[quote=KimInNB]So far someone has suggested there is no despair in my photo simply because it's a sunny place (been to Niger in West Africa lately, honey?).
I find a lot of the set-up shots just aren't cutting it this week - they can't portray the emotion that the street people and beggars can. I don't start at 5 just because it's a photo - if you don't meet the challenge you don't get marks no matter how good the photo is. If you meet the challenge, you start at a 5 and work your way up.
But I've decided not to comment on any more photos since I've already been attacked for my views. Hmmm, aren't we supposed to give our opinions on the photos here???[/quote
Read your first paragraph and your third paragraph together, they cancel each other out :). |

Spell-checkers don't check grammar or syntax, although there are programs which do (they originated on UNIX systems so far as I know). I'm also working on a collection of homonyms and other mistakes which will make it past any routine spell-check program, so send me any others you notice... |

Are you still using WordStar or something, General? All decent word-processors have included a grammer checker for many versions back.

Ha ha...no, actually I use no word processors, unless you count writing mail in AOL, and rarely MS Word when I need to change the format of a file so I can import it elsewhere. I did know there were specific programs for syntax but didn't realize they were fully integrated with spell-checkers. Most of my work involves printing from layout and imposition programs, so I use a spell-checker about once/month.
There's still quite a few things they don't catch. So far, my favorite is from the (late) Berkeley Daily Planet. Their report of a meeting noted that there was no point in discussing a recent political junket (trip) because it was already a "fete accompli." |
