I'm in the market for a "desktop replacement" laptop. I'm a web designer and do a little video editing also. I need a laptop that will literally replace my desktop when I'm on the road. I do a lot of work with Photoshop CS2, Dreamweaver, Sorenson Squeeze, and Adobe Premiere Pro. Does anybody know who makes the most powerful laptops out there? Thanks a lot.

What is your budget for the laptop? Alienware makes some pretty powerful machines, but you pay for it. I personally have an HP NW8000 mobile workstation. It is designed for what you mentioned, to be a desktop replacement, but it also wasn't cheap.

I could probably spend $3,000...maybe a little more. I just want something that is well built, extremely fast, lots of RAM, and has the biggest screen possible (I guess that's 17" for laptop). It has to be able to handle everything I do without skipping a beat.

Would you want a widescreen laptop, or just normal? My laptop right now can handle more or less anything I throw at it. I do a lot with PSCS2 and also do 3D part and assembly rendering with Solidworks 2006 and AutoCad 2006 without any difficulty at all and it will currently set you back about $3200-$3300. The only problem comes with graphics intensive gaming, but then again, this machine is nearly two years old too. I'll do a little research and get back to you in a few minutes.

I just picked up a desktop replacement for work. Got the Dell D810 wide screen. I selected just about every option available and got the docking station and was able to keep it under $2k
It runs all of my apps without problems. I highly recommend it.

Ok here's what I found, if you want simply the best of the best that has an incredible amount of CPU power, RAM, and hard drive space all while sacrificing battery life and a high cost, your best option is this. If you don't need that sort of power, you could try with something like this. The processor in the Dell machine isn't anywhere near to the multi-tasking capacity of a dual core AMD CPU. However, the one thing you need to keep in mind about dual core processors is that they do not work in tandem, meaning that two 4.0GHz CPUs don't equal 8.0GHz. This only means that you can run two processor intensive applications at the same time, so you could run multiple tasks at the same time without any loss of CPU power. Any questions, let me know.

| Get yourself a Apple if you do video and web design you can not go wrong with the power and performance. After test driving on the other day I can not believe what it can do compared to its competition. |
