After following the Nudity thread. It seems that it may be prudent to create a sub-site for younger members.

Topics for discussion:
Number of minor members and users currently on DPC
Moderation of a sub-site
Level of competion
Age ranges (perhaps differnt level challenges by age?)
The advantages of minors competing against adults.

OK, let's discuss.

Excellent Idea!

Search around and you'll find it's been discussed.

As I remember, the conclusion was that this all wasn't a problem for any of the parents involved, and the admins have more than enough trouble keeping this site functioning, without starting a parallel site for kids. Anyone else who wants to start a kids photography site is welcome to do so.

If you are concerned about kids having a certain perspective about certain images, well, you can make that argument about many groups and image types -- pretty soon no one would be able to vote on anything.

Personally, I am more concerned about my son seeing guns than breasts -- he's seen those before, and is familiar with what they're used for. I'd rather he not be so familiarized with guns and what they're used for ...

Good idea, but are there that many kids around these parts to make it worthwhile?

I know there are a few, but most of the ones I know of have no trouble holding their own with anyone else here.

My thirteen year old son (yakatyou) recently joined and entered his first challenge (Afterlife). I told him of the numerous other teens in DPC, but he has yet to encounter any.

To provide some sort of segregation so that they could meet in forums and challenges would be great. Of course, he could start a thread for now, but an area of this site set aside for the teens would be better.

If you are advocating a sub-site for all children then I would be dead against it. I for one do not need to have DPC assume a responsibilty that is mine. If indeed we cater to this line of thinking, then why not do the same for photos depicting violence, suicide and other images that are troubling.

Just a thought.

Sounds like a lot of effort with precious little return.

It might be nice to run an Underage challenge now and again though.

Aside from that, I would say that to ask that D&L put this up would be inappropriate. There's more than enough work going into this site to keep them busy.

As a teen, I always hated things that were designed for teens. I seldom hung out with other teens because I found most of them irritating and immature. If I were a teen now, I'd be just as happy using this site with an older peer group.

As far as the nudity is concerned, well that's being dealt with elsewhere.

No proof has ever been shown that seeing nudity causes damage in any way shape or form. This is just a very british/american opinion about what is right or wrong. Nudity is quite commonplace and most people see some nudity at some point daily (in the mirror).

If I were a parent, I would lean that way myself. The standards that have made violence more acceptable than our own skin baffles me.

I do however think that a Kids site may be productive in that it could cater challenges to younger minds. More fun challenges for them. I mean how many kids want to do Abstract Macro? Certainly would have turned me off as a youngster.

Maybe only since the reign of Queen Victoria ... you'll find plenty of bawdiness in Chaucer and Shakespeare ...

My position is not that I'm concerned about my son coming across anything that I am opposed to him viewing. I've seen nothing on this site yet that concerns me.

He has proven that he can hold his own in his first challenge entry. He has enthusiastically viewed hundreds of photos and read the comments. He has joined in on some threads and is looking forward to the Florida GTG in two weeks.

I simply think that to be able to engage other teens in discussions and challenges would be something that would make this site even better for him. If it can't happen, then he will continue to enjoy this site as it is.

And if you ever go to the Britain, check out the page three girls in most of the newspapers if you think that the British have a problem with nudity.

I would quite like to see a kids' forum section. As it is, I disabled the forums on my daughter's account, but it would be nice if she could have access to a kids' section.

As far as the photos are concerned, I am much more worried about her viewing the dark, scary, violent ones, than the gentle nudity seen around here.

As far as the voting goes: some of the votes from the adults don't seem to make much sense either, so what's the difference letting the few kids have THEIR say, too?

If you search deep (within the last year) into the forums I believe you'll find a thread where most of the younger members "introduced themselves" to each other -- you should be able to compile a list from that.

No General..... I meant kids' forum as in something that can be enabled by the parents, yet have the rest of the forums invisible to them.

I think that im a 'kid' by the standards that are being set here. Personaly i would like to see some challenges that are refined to younger people. I also think that not exposing young people to aspects of photography, such as nudes, is not right. If someone is a young aspiring photographer, they should be able to view all different types of photography. I know a couple of teens on this site and i know most of them would agree with this. We chose to join this site to be in the competitions, be them nude or not nude it shouldnt be an issue. We signed up to be in challenges with adults, and we want to be in challenges with adults.

That would be up to the admins to set up, but might not be too hard.

In the meantime, I wanted you to know that the "kids" had some way of finding out who many of them were, so they could communicate in some way, either in their own thread or by PM or something else ...

My problem with a "kids forum" is that then the younger set is waving a big ole red flag about their age to those less than desirable members of society that look for such things. At least, as it is, the younger members blend in with the older ones.
