Did these photos change the world or had it already changed at the time the photo was made? I submit that it is a considerable stretch to claim any photo changes society or culture, but rather represents what already exists. In the vast world and it's diversity of life, so very few ever see these images it is unlikely they have any substantive effect. However, the mediums of televison and film have a unique ability to communicate in a far more compelling way, especially with their ability to motivate and inspire in a manner that the still image cannot. That coupled with the rapid development of worldwide communications have certainly a profound effect on world cultures today. The very fuel of the protest fire is television.
Life magazine has always had the unique fantasy that their magazine changed the world, but IMO, that egg came after the chicken. |
