I agree! In no way was I trying to dispute this as I'm a great fan of Landscape and natural beauty. I'm also a big fan of a lot of the Icelandic Photographers.
We've been in this lousy weather pattern here in the northeast with no end in site... I work outside on weekends so I'm a little sensitive about 59 (our high temp for the past week) feeling like 85 (what I want). However, I was surprised at the response.

I know the weather can be a real pain, it gets quite cold here in Munich too, with being so close to the alps. But we also get our nice fresh air and sunny summer days too. |

Hehehe... well incidentally I'll be back in the northern hemisphere for the worst part of winter.
Not that you can really call it winter. The average daytime temperature in the middle of july (when it's coldest) down here is 20 degrees celcius (it gets down to 10 degrees on average in the middle of the night). I'm not really sure about temperature conversions - but I think 20 degrees celcius is about 70 f ??!!

Not sure why so many great photographers come from Iceland, one reason though might be that DPC is a popular website among the icelandic photographers so most of them are here, so we probably have a higher ratio of photographers using dpc than other countries.
On the temperature thing I don't agree with DanSig when he compares 55F here to 95F in Cali....I've been to both places and it's definitely not the same in my opinion. However Icelanders require much lower temp. for them to be out wearing their t-shirts and shorts, 55°F will suffice for many ;)
The average temperature last summer in Reykjavik(capital city) was 11.5°C(52.7°F), and it has only three times before been higher in the history of Iceland(or since weather-data was first recorded and stored)
The highest temperature recorded in Reykjavik last summer was 24.8°C(76.64°F), which is the current record (the former record is 113 years old) Highest temperature ever recorded in Iceland was a one-time only near 30°C(86°F) in the eastern part of the island.
During the winter it's around 0°C(32°F) in January/February and then gradually rises towards summer.
Enough of my weather-nerdism though, just wanted the facts to be presented ;)
We are truly lucky though to be born and raised here, surrounded by the beutiful landscape. |

Well to join in on this intresting conversation, the reason for the digital photography explosion that is taking place here in iceland is the fact that our economic growth is right now huge. The Dollar / Icelandic crown ratio is just silly so the import here right now is very big.
We allso live in a unique country that allows us to have great motives, but at the same time there is almost one computer per household. Wich makes digital photograophy a very good option for most families.
If you give a person with some artistic knowledge a camera he will probably be able to create decent photos. And since Iceland has always the "We are the greatest country in the world, atleast per capita" ideology we tend to go somewhat over the edge at times :)
As an exmple of the explosive growth of digital photography me and a friend started a site that is icelander only website where people share ideas, photos and compete with photos, just like here but on a very much smaller scale.
In under 6 months we have over 700 members on that site. That is 0.002 of the entire population. That would be for a american site to have 450 thousand members.
I could continue rambling about this. But I just wanted you to know that Iceland realy is the greatest country in the world.... atleast / capita :)
Please continue with these questions, and I will try to answer them :) |

Actually there are 1000 americans to each icelander. Which means that if you have 700 members a US site should have 700.000

Stumbled upon this thread, and being an Icelander, thought we could rekindle the subject.
I am not sure what the score was back when this thread was alive, but it sure is good for the Icelanders right now. (If my own poor ratings are troubling the Icelandic stats, just count me as an Icelander abroad = under bad influence.)
I am pleased as punch seeing all these Icelanders scoring high in almost every challenge.
Heiða Helgadóttir is an excellent example of a succesful Icelander on DPC. She tops the fave list and her work is truly fantabulous. You know her as heida of course.
What none of my countrymen stated, is the fact that Icelanders love toys, probably have a hard time growing up. Look at some of their profiles, their gear is incredible.
They have a good eye, they know their cameras, they love and know how to use Photoshop. And they never ever give up. As one of them says on his profile on the Icelandic site. Luck comes with practice.
The only difference between the possible and the impossible is that the impossible takes a little bit longer. |

Guðrún GÃsladóttir
Now how would you pronounce that?
:)
Also Heida? |
|
|
03/23/2006 05:21:58 AM · #41 |
Gvuthroon Geesladottir
Haytha as in hay+tha
the ð is as th in the
the G in Gisladottir as the G in Guyver or glamour, not as the g in general
the o in dottir is almost as the o in low
Almost forgot. The stress is always on the first syllable.

So would Heida's name be prounounced Hi-tha ? I figured Heida was the equivalent to Heidi in English. I thought the that little o with a squiggly above it sounded like a "d".
I want to go to Iceland!!!!
PS EDIT: Duh! Just realized when you put Hay tha that was for Heida.... :)
