I'm trying to decide between one of the following lenses for my rebel xt:
Canon 17-40 f/4 L
Zeiss 35-70 f/3.4 Vario Sonnar
Tamron 28-75 f/2.8
I know a more appropriate Canon comparison would be the 24-70 L, but the 17-40 L is more in the same price bracket as the other two. Right now my current lens lineup is : Canon 70-200 f/4 L, Canon 18-55 kit lens, Canon 50mm f/1.8. I'm looking for something to replace the 18-55.
Anyone know where I can find some comparisons between the lenses or does anyone have any personal experience with them? Thanks! |

| I love my Tamron 28-75 f/2.8. It is my main lens I use 90% of the time now. The Canon 50mm 1.8 is fantastic value for money and definately worth having. Not having owned the other 2 lenses you mentioned I can't comment on those. |

Canon 17-40 $680.00 at B&H and a great lens
Tamron 28-75 $349.00 at B&H and a great lens and a great deal.
I didn't look at Zeiss, but I chose the tamron over the canon for a walk around lens because I tended to use the wider end more than the short end with the kit lens. Besides I am cheap. |

ED: that 2.8 comes in handy quite a bit...

The Tameron is the best of the bunch, but weak on the wide end.
If you can live without the constant 2.8, check out the Sigma 17-70 2.8-4.5
It's new but looks very promising, and will match up well with you 70-200.
There's a comparison with the Sigma 18-50 here
It's very reasonably priced at $359
I know I'll be getting one soon to replace my kit lens. |

Out of your choices, I like the 17-40L.
