Some photogs need to calibrate thier monitors. I'm prefectly calibrated and finding some of the images in "Low-Key" very hard to see.

This challenge is dark by nature. A too low contrast monitor might have hurt you. If you're struggling with the scores on this one, make sure to check out this graphic and calibrate your monitor.

Can you see each block as a seperate tone? If not, you may be getting popped for being too dark or too contrasty.

you know fotomann, this is weird. I know my monitor is correctly calibrated with the software inside my mac. I do this every once in a while, say, once a month, to be absolutely sure my monitor is ok.

when I check my photo's on other monitors (I always do when I enter a challenge), they are most of the time darker then I've seen it on my own monitor (like my "rebel" photo), or too white (like my "mother" and "new life2" photos). I know I should calibrate them first too, to be really sure about the contrasts, but why? I don't think the voters have calibrated their monitors too?

Best to have it right. The more right, the less problems you will have with voters being less than calibrated.

Has anyone used the Pantone Huey? It's only $89 and I'm thinking about buying it. How does it work and does it work well?

Also, what temperature do most keep their monitors? I read somewhere that 6500 is the best temp, but that seems yellowish to me.

I bet you right and that most don't have a calibrated work flow! To me it is a must.

I look at my entries on 5 or 6 monitors at home and work. Some calibrated some not and I try to make it look good on all. So as not to be voted down by some one else who has no idea what calibration is.

You post that black bar and ask us if we see shades?

Yeah fotoman I know what you mean. I got myself a calibration spider for heaps of money and have my photos full with color information and get hit for blow outs! Sad but not much you can do about it really.

I'd go crazy if I had a photo which is too dark or light because my monitor wasn't calibrated!! I don't think my teacher would like it either ;)

I meant to say if your monitor is correct, the photo will be correct. If the photo is correct, you will have less problems from voters that have monitors that are not calibrated.

It's ok, my rant was over on the first post. :-) You guys can carry on. I like to try to read other languages.

You have to remember that a lot of people on this site are only beginners. They aren't even aware thats theres a problem. I bet if I put a 4X5 or 8X10 camera in most of the hands here, they would be lost. It is my opinion that a "majority" of the voters her are amateurs, in both technical skills, and the ability to critique an image beyond the surface of the image. Im sorry if this seems condescending, it is not meant to be. However I have seen too many beautiful images score in the 100th place area. I often wonder what are people looking at. Also I have become very good at predicting what kind of "literal" images will be shot for a challenge and then predicting the winner not based on technical or artistic merit but on how I feel "most amateurs" would vote.
