Does anybody know what kind of bird this is? At first I thought it was a kingfisher, but I'm not sure they get this big (bigger than a duck) and had white tassles off the back of his head and under his bill. He was perched on a branch for about a half-hour watching the catfish in the water below, waiting for the right moment to strike. He got one, but turned his body coming out of the water and flew away from camera so you couldn't see it in the shots after these. Thanks for any help.

It looks like a Kingfisher but could possibly be some sort of Heron.

Doesn't look like a Kingfisher, at all, to me.

Possibly a Black Crowned Night Heron?

Excellent Shots, BTW!

Thanks for all the replies. I have to study up on my herons, I was only familiar with the great blue or the longer/taller ones. There was also a juvenille there too, according to the website greatandsmall provided, and I got a cool photo of him catching a catfish too. Thanks again!

Thanks! Patience paid off here. I was looking through the viewfinder for about a 1/2 hour just waiting for him to drop in for a fish.
