If my entries look a bit whacky the next few challenges, I'm blaming it on the new eye glasses I picked up today. Damn, I didn't relaize just how drastic the new prescription was - although the eye doc warned me - until I put them on and tried looking at the world around me. My right eye, yeah the viewfinder eye, has gotten considerably worse - close to 20/200 without correction now. Thank goodenss corrected I can see pretty good with it. My deprth perception has gone down to 20% non-corrected as I am both near-sighted and far-sighted, and the near-sighted eye has decided it doesn't feel like struggling to see depth anymore. The new specs are supposed to be bumping that up to about 50%. All I know is that walking around with these on today is making me dizzy. Trying to do some post-processing on images for my work-place contest was driving me bonkers!
So anyhow - I now have an excuse for the next few challenges is my entries don't look quite right. ;-)

| I'll ride this wagon with Linda! I got my new eyes last week and they took them back on Saturday for 5 to 10 (business) days to get tinting and reflective coating put on. Spoil me for a week and make me struggle for another! eesh! |

I was all set to get it done, but decided I needed the 20D more. lol
The eye doc says I'm really not a good candidate at this time as my eyes had such a significant change over the past 2 years. They recommend 2 years of stability before having the surgery. One of these years I hope to though.

Oh..you mean you have progressive lenses...same intended function as bifocals perhaps, but not bifocals, progressive.

That's funny, I made the complete opposite decision. I decided I needed eyesight more than the 20D, so I got the S2 instead, which I intend to keep as a backup camera. I'll get a 2nd hand 20D or possibly the new 30D if my income in April works out :).
It's been more than 8 months now since my laser surgery and it's strange how I feel about my surgery.
Since it's quite normal for us not to have glasses or contacts or anything, it took me all of a week to basically forget that I ever wore the darned things. This surprised me a LOT. I have almost completely lost all sense of empathy for glasses wearers because it feels like a lifetime ago.
The biggest thing that I have had to adjust to is that my eyes are significantly more dry than they once were. I've got a fair bit of glaring at night when they are dry, but this is still improving gradually.
Others have told me that by the 1 year point, this will be completely gone.
I think people with interest in photography notice these sorts of things much more than the average patient for laser surgery.
I got the Wavefront tuned surgery.
My visual acuity was around 20/400 before and is now very slightly better than 20/20.
Even in normal lighting situations though, I still experience a bit of poor detail when the lighting is highly contrasting.
Low light performance is also not as good as before with glasses. This is mostly due to the fact that as your eye expands, more of your lens gets used. There's always a small amount of error in the lens and as you use more, the overall quality will therefore drop. It's the same thing as using a lens that's got really soft edge sharpness.
My vision performance still varies a fair bit with the sleep that I get. Most particularly, the sleep that I get before midnight. If I get to bed a couple days in a row before 11:00, the next few days have a marked increase in visual acuity.
All in all though, I'm pretty happy.
I used to encounter difficulties when doing daytrips and not having brought anything for my contacts if things went too late and I had to do a stay-over. What a pain in the butt.
Now, when I do daytrips, I can get by with just going to a 7-11 and grabbing a toothbrush if I need to make an un-anticipated stay-over.
Convenience! |
