| One thing that's confused (and frustrated) me is the inconsistancy of print ratios. Right off the bat, the two most popular print sizes 4x6 and 8x10 are grossly different in heightxwidth ratio. If an image is edited out of camera without crop and prints as expected, why lose 2 inches in width (and your intended composition) on an 8x10 print? Why is the standard not 8x12? |

I think the 8x10 print is based largely on the way most photos used to be taken, in a studio with a 4x5 view camera.
You can get 8x12 prints (e.g. at Costco). The main problem is that almost all digital cameras are based on a video standard 4:3 ratio, which doesn't fit any standard-sized prints, so almost every digital image will require cropping somewhere. |
