| This may be a stupid question, but I've heard about people who use long exposures and will fire the flash multiple times. I have a rebel xt with a sigma 500 dg xt flash on it, and I'm trying to figure out how to fire it more than once per shutter actuation. Thanks! |

Hmmm..fire the strobe manually? I've played a bit (very little) with the camera on a tripod on a long exposure and i walk around with the strobe and fire it from the test button.
alternatively, my metz has a funciton that fires it strobsco[ically - X times per second (adjustable) and i have not played with that.

Camera on tripod set on M mode, f/4, Shutter 30 seconds, remote released, 580EX flash fired manually about 5times as I walked towards the lighthouse. |

The previous two answers have covered all the bases.
Most of the time, it will be someone firing the flash manually, often while walking around and/or pointing it in different directions. You could use this to light up different areas of a dark outside scene (as in Dr Nick's image) or light the entire interior of a large dark room, section by section.
Sometimes it will be using the flash's strobe function (if it has one). For example, my flash (Minolta 5600HSD) will let me fire strobe-style from 1 to 40 flashes spaced at intervals varying from 1 second to 1/100 of a second at 1/8, 1/16 or 1/32 of the unit's rated power. |

| That answers my question. My camera doesn't have a strobe function, but taking the flash off the camera and walking around with it will be great for what I need it for. Thanks again! |
