For those of you who are able to earn more than $100 per month from stock photography:
1) How many images do you submit per month, on average?
2) How many agencies do you use?
3) Do you typically submit the same image to all agencies (assuming non-exclusive)

You probably need to have at least 400 images up to make $100 a month per site. Less if you have really unique pictures. Stock shooters with people photos will really benefit and require less to make the $100 goal level.

It varies a lot, but I've been at istockphoto (exclusively, to answer your question) about 16 months and have about 230 photos +/- with them now. I'm hoping to have 600 or more photos there by the end of this year. My first $100 month was this January. February increased to $136, and so far for March I'm at about $75. |

I have from 100 - 200 pictures on all of the sites I work with. I generally post every week or so, but I am trying to reach a 1000 uploads by the end of the year, so I have a lot of work ahead of me. I also post most of my pictures to ll of the sites I work with. In some cases, i don't upload certain photos because I know the site will reject them, such as a simple wood figure that one site thinks is copyrighted. The folowing are the sites I work with:
ShutterStock
iStockPhoto
Dreamstime
Big Stock Photo
123 Royalty Free Fotolia
ShutterStock has by far been doing the best for me, so i am focusing on doing what I can to increase my numbers there, such as shooting what I think they like and making sure I process my pictures in a way that they will like.
I hope this helps. |

Thanks folks. Your feedback is about what I suspected. I am just getting started and set a goal of 100 images by the end of the year. But, I wasn't sure if that was enough to make a reasonable profit. Sounds like it could be (at least for a start).

I guess it depends on what you shoot mostly, and where you sell it. On average - 20 photos of solid landscapes is about a dollar a day. People photos sell more, though since 99% of my models are children and familyl members I only sell those to Macro (rather than micro) as the chances for misuse/imappropriate use of those photos is lower.
Though, I have only been in this hard-core for stock for a month or so since my other shoots dried up with the economy. Im keeping a tally here as I get my uploads done and what I am making per week with what site...

Here are the agencies I submit to
Shutterstock
Fotolia
Dreamstime
Can Stock Photo
Istock
Bigstock
Alamy
I submit all the same images to all the microstocks, and submit rights managed images to alamy.
I have a fairly extensive graphs (for the last 1+ years), and i think it is pretty acurate to say you should be able to make $5.00/ picture/ year, which is to say, if you want to make $100/month, that is $1,200/ year which means only 240 images. I find however that the more pictures you have, the more you make per picture, probably because you gallery gets looked at more often. Another point is, if you take people picture, or other strong stock pictures, $5.00/picture/year is a low estimate, I believe some are making $10.00 with a sizy and attractive portfolio. If you take just around the house/vaction images, the $5.00 might be a bit high, perhaps $2.50/image/year is more appropraite.
