I'm trying out ACDSee 9 pro, and so far I'm pretty impressed.
One thing that seems to be missing that I need all the time though is a simply way to copy the file name and path to the clipboard. What's the use of finding a file if you can't use it easily in another program! Sure it supports drag and drop, but that doesn't work when trying to fill in a form!
This is a simple but KILLER feature. Thumbsplus has it, my windows explorer replacement (tracker) has this, and I can't live without it for entering photos into POTD site forms. Anyone know how to do this in ACDSee?

Oope, I meant ACDsee 8 Pro. Anyone else using it or trying it out?

Nope. That company ticked me off. The product is good, but they screw the customer.
I bought ver 7 last March. There were various suggestions and bug reports...no response. They released version 8, which fixed the bugs in 7, and asked me for another 40$(A whole 10$ off for buying it 6 months earlier) to buy the fixes. If you read the ver 7 forums(they've been merged to older version forums I think) there were a lot of complaints along those lines, that they basically left the v7 owners out to dry for a long time before 8 came out but was in the pipeline.
Never buying from them again.

Neil, don't have an answer for your question, sorry. It's a great organizing program. But I wanted to give you a little warning (in case you didn't already know): don't use ACDSee to import original files from your camera, or even use the program to look at the file (without an existing backup) if you're going to use a photo here. It changes the exif data and puts "Application: ACD Systems Digital" or something like that into the exif, making it appear unoriginal. I used to use it all the time to transfer photos to the hard drive, but as soon as I found out about that I stopped using it. |

Thanks for the warning Marc. Does it touch RAW files too? That would really be outrageous.
I am generally impressed with user interface of the program, but I still find the absense of a way to easily copy the file name and path a show stopper for me, since usually, when I am looking for a picture from the archive, I want it to load on a website.
I don't recall whether iView had this feature, and unfortunately, I got busy soon after my trial of iView began, and didn't really get to fully work through the progam. But I recall I was pretty impressed with that one too. I am hoping to get another trial of iView soon after my workload clears a bit.
One other show stopper with ACDsee, more insurmountable than the file path copy. I tried to index a DVD, similar to my tests I did with the other programs for off-line cataloging. I wasn't timing like I did the others, but I was AMAZED at how long it took. It worked nicely in the background, but it was going for several hours per disc as I recall. I'll have to do it more "formally" before my trial is up. That's a real issue.

Unfortunately, Jason, this is true of a lot of companies. It makes me mad too. To get bug fixes, you end up paying for a new version, and the new version has new bugs too! Vendors should be required to continue to fix and support their old versions, at least for a year or two. You should not have to buy something else to fix their mistakes.
