Ummm.... my hard drive is not responding. In fact, it makes horrible clicking noises instead of starting up. It's the hard drive with all my pictures on it.

What are my options? (Besides going into a panic followed by a deep depression.)

First of all quit trying to access it, you may cause more damage to it. Then go search for Data Recovery specialists.

Buy a new one and transfer your backed up images. ;-/

Yeah, I think I should shut the computer down and take out the drive. I figure it's the drive mechanism itself that's hosed - data should be there if the medium can be transferred to a drive with a working mechanism, right?

Try putting it in a Ziplock bag and put it in the freezer for an hour or two. Then boot it up and copy what you need off of it IMMEDIATELY.

It's good if you can use an external enclosure to connect the drive to, partly because you don't have to wait for the system to boot up before you can copy it, and partly so it doesn't drip inside your box :P

It sounds kind of crazy, but we've been able to recover data off of a lot of drives that would spin up but wouldn't show up in the system that way.

I've heard of that. I'm about to shut down and pull the thing. Then go buy an enclosure and another drive.

I really, really want my pictures back, but am not sure I want to spend upwards of $700 to get 'em. I'm not doing this for a living.

Any luck? I unfortunately had the same thing last weekend and the drive's gone for good. Lost all my photos because I was too stooopid to back stuff up. I'm over panic now and on to deep depression mixed with total denial. And, of course, am quitting photography forever. Hopefully your mess has gone better!

I'm right there with you. I still have a few things to try, though I know the effort will be quite futile. First - I'm gonna drop the thing from about waist high onto the floor. Then plug it in again, see if it works. Then I'll freeze it for an hour. Plug it in again, see if it works. Finally, I'll freeze it, drop it from the height of about two stories, then bury it in the back yard.

I was SO bummed Saturday. By Sunday I was p!ssed. I'm still in denial, of course. And hoping to eventually salvage SOMETHING.

And yes, quitting photography also passed through my mind, too! No incentive to go shoot at all. Weird, huh? Hopefully that'll pass. I did try to recapture my Blue II shot, but the cat was most uncooperative, which is her normal behaviour. That's why that particularly shot was so good - she actually sat still! Sigh...

Sorry to hear you had to go through the same thing - it's truly miserable. Hopefully everyone else will learn from our mistakes!

Lol! Do let me know if any of those work. Do you think freezing it after it's been dropped and buried in the yard would work? We have a lot of snow.

Here's a brain fart you should try if you ok with computers. Try changing your power supply. One of my HD's seemed to be giving me a hard time until I changed the power supply and it turned out that it wasn't getting enough power to run properly.
