So this girl who looks a lot like me walks up to my house on Saturday.
It turns out she's my sister.
That I didn't know existed.
My sister...
Okay, this is how it happened.
I was out doing some photography stuff for my boyfriend's history group. On the way home, my stepmother called and said that a girl who looks like me just came over and asked for me, and so they gave her my address and stuff.
So I hurry home, and a bit later a girl walked up, and introduced herself as Ebony. Behind her is my biological uncle, James, who I already knew (but had lost contact with for the past 6 years). He confirmed that she was my sister, and that they live in Las Vegas.
See, I was adopted when I was 1, and then in '96, I found my biological father and his family. He passed in 2001, and I had remembered him saying that he had 3 other kids, out west somewhere. That's all he'd said, and that's all I knew. I didn't really think a whole lot about it because I didn't even know names/sex/location/anything.
So anyway, Ebony and my uncle, James, went to the neighborhood I lived in back in '96, which my dad happens to live in now. He doesn't live super close to my old place, and he lives in a house - I had lived in an apartment complex. They couldn't find me at the apartment complex, so they decided to stop at a random house to see if those people might have seen me around or anything. It happened to be my dad's house.(!!!!!!) My stepmother questioned them extensively until she was confident that they were being honest, and then told them where I live now. So they show up, and now I know my sister, my brother, and various other relatives - 2 aunts, several cousins, and - get this - the cousin that I was named after! I had no clue that I was named after anyone.
Granted, this is all my biological family, and I was adopted away from that family when I was a baby, but it's so awesome to finally have relatives that look like me. Blood relatives. I can't get over it. :) And my son looks JUST like my brother. :):)
And on an even 'niftier' note... she's as into photography as I am, she has the same camera AND lenses, and we went to DC yesterday just to take pictures. She taught me so much. :):)
Here's a snapshot we took just after meeting. I'm in the white sweater.

Really cool. I am adopted as well but have yet to find any of my biological family. Of course, I probably haven't searched as hard as I could yet. Congrats to you on meeting your family!

Very weird sometimes how this world works, huh?
My best friend is adopted and he has never expressed any interest in finding his biological family. If it was me, i'd wanna know I think.

That is just so cool! Although, I'm confused...I thought you said that your dad passed away in 2001 - but then you said he lives not far from where you used to live???
Anyway...what a great story and we sure hope to see your sis hanging around DPC soon! |

Really great news Andrea, very pleased it has worked out so well for you!
I only met my biological sister 18 months ago after she got in contact with our mother, who had her when she was a teenager and went through the adoption process. While it was mentioned a couple of times when I was younger, it was only after she tracked our mother down it went from an abstract concept to a reality.
She looks soooo like our mother I would have done a double take in the street had I seen her.
Freaky fact: her name is Denise, which is the same as my wife!
I hope you have as much fun with your newly discovered family as I have over the last 18 months.
Jamie

(step-dad lives close by)
That is really awesome! Congratulations
I think it was last year I found out that my sister had a little boy she put up for adoption more than 18 years ago. I knew back then that she had gone to "visit" family in Florida but just found out that she actually went there to have her baby. Somewhere I also have a niece that my other sister had put up for adoption even longer ago when her and her husband decided they weren't ready for children yet.

| That is awesome!!! I am adpoted as well but I know very little about my history, not even totally sure where I was born. I know that my birth parents had 2 other kids before me. Unforunately in TN where I was born all records- even nonidentifing inormation -were closed until 1997. It's all good though. Congrat's to you and your family. Thanks for sharing your story. |
