Ctrl+A to select the canvas, select>modify>contract>choose how many pixels (you'll have to experiment), Edit>Stroke>pick color, pick inside, outside, center and size (you'll have to experiment)

Hope this helps! =]

See-through border - is a border that isn't 100% opaque - change percent of opacity to vary the see-through-ness.

Is this part of the original photo, faded, or the original photo enlarged and made into a border?

For the former, you can also:
-Select All
-Select > Modify > Border as many pixels as you want
-Feather selection if you want to fade the effect
-Use any Adjustment (Levels, Curves, Hue/Sat. etc) to modify the selection

Here's an extreme example using an oval vignette instead of a rectangular selection ...

Here are a couple which show the both meanings. Basically, enlarge the photo in a new document, and paste the original on top.

1st option: duplicate layer - transform to x percent (x = 100 or less) - set first layer to e.g. 70 percent opacity
2nd option: make selection - copy - invert selection - paste into selection - transform - fill with white at e.g. 30 percent opacity

No seizures allowed here! I even gave it the traditional spelling, and added the obligatory hyphen.

This is cool also. How did you do that? Better yet, how do you do that and keep it challenge legal (basic)? I messed around with it a little doing selections, etc... but nothing available in a regular border type adjustment.

From what I read, yes. You must be using PS. I don't have the Edit/Stroke choice in PSP X. The only way I could do it was to select all, modify, contract - then - crop to selection, copy/paste as new image, add border to new, copy and paste back into original image as a new layer (undo the selection/crop on original first). Instead of doing the select all/modify/contract I could have done a simple rectangular selection. Couldn't figure a way to work with the selected area to add a "border". PSP X kept wanting to apply it to the entire image no matter what I tried.

Of course, this process wouldn't be legal in basic (layer containing pixel data, selection made but not for cropping) - not sure if it's ok for advanced editing or not as technically it adds an element inside the image.

I've also seen some frames where part of the photo was ooozing into the frame. I can't find one at the moment, but there were a few in a recent challenge. Not sure if it was square crop or another.

I have PSP. Anyone care to enlighten PSP users on this technique as well as the see thru technique?

You can get some interesting effects using the Image/Picture Frames, but I'm not sure those are legal either? It would be rare for me to want to use this type of border for a challenge entry overall, however, there has been a time or two I thought about it.
