Today I went with my study-class to Scheveningen (The Hague). Had a great time, until.. my camera broke :(

the shutter won't do it's job anymore. error 99. crap.

when I got home, there were 2 assignments in my mailbox for me, waiting for reply... great timing!

I think I can cry right now :(

What lens? Error 99 is possibly camera/lens communication. Check the contacts on both.

Sounds like it's time for a new body, then get this one fixed and it becomes your backup. Good luck!

@ Cpanaioti: I tried with 3 lenses, but that won't work.. tried different batteries too..

@ Strangeghost: I think so too ;) around the clock almost 2 times (20.000) so I think the shutter is wasted. I'm gonna have it fixed soon.. and might think about a new body!

hope things are gonna be ok!

Considering your assignments:

Check some camera shops in your area for a body you could hire, some shops do that, others are willing to let you hire a demo. And some just don't.

That might be something to consider. Do you think Camex will hire camera's? Or some other shops?
Otherwise I might ask somebody to lend their cam for a couple of days.

I take it you tried removing the battery and putting it back in? I believe that worked for me one time when I got that error.
03/11/2006 07:58:38 PM · #8
yup, tried that.

right now the shutter won't move anymore. power off, ERR 99

:(

I've heard of lots of canon shooters getting this error. They say it's related to the grip usually. Anyway, the solution seems to be remove the battery for one minute - then all is well. Still sucks bigtime if your in the middle of something important.

"krtsj" is the sound it makes.

Oh, dear. This (ERR99) sounds exactly like what happened to me not too long ago. Canon replaced the shutter mechanism.

Yes, it took $200 to get it repaired at Canon and yes, I bought a new body (350XT)while I waited because the camera store I entrusted it to took 6 weeks to complete the transfer to Canon and back. However, Canon is really good about repairs and it may be that if you send it in yourself and keep tabs on your camera, it shouldn't take too long.

Edited to remove link to the Canon repair on my 350XT which happened just after I got the 300D-Rebel back. That repair had nothing to do with ERR99. Sorry. Anyhow, the XT repair took about 6 days compared to the 6 weeks for the 300D.

I sure hope both of them are in good working order now.

I decided to go to a local shop first to see what the problem really is. maybe it's not that bad.
if it is bad, I'll send it to canon to let them fix it.

I'm serious thinking about getting a 20D.. that would be nice :)

I've had this - it just sat there and the shutter would not do anything, at the time I thought it was the end.I cured it by using the 'clear all camera settings' in the menu and by using single shot mode instead of multi shot mode. It happened to me last year but since I did this its been fine. I am well over the 25,000 mark with the shutter.

When it happened to me it was after i made the mistake of changing lens whilst the camera was powered up, I always turn the camera off when I change lens (well that time I forgot!)

This has just happened with my 350D. You could try cleaning all the contacts on the camera and on the lenses with a pencil rubber (eraser!), when i was searching the web a lot of people found this sorted it out. Apperently the err99 is a kind of 'catch all' error, so could be a multitude of things. I tried firing the shutter with no lens on and I still got it! so after 5000 clicks mines gone back for a new shutter. I hope yours is something simple!

yep, mine does it too (or doesn't ;) ) without the lens on it.. so it's not the contacts on the cam & lens.

At home I have what I like to call a "SLIGHT ADJUSTMENT TOOL" which I use in situasions like this - It is basically a 4lb hammer. When you use that tool the camera makes a noise like - "CRACK!!!!.

LOL - not realy - pity to hear about your cam - Can just imagine that happening to me before a wedding gig. EISH.

could you send it to me Marcellieb? ;-)

Made my decision, I'm gonna have my 300D fixed, and tomorrow I'm hoping to get back home with a 20D (if they're available..)
