I'm currently considering buying a CANON EF 50mm F1.8

I appreciate that the MK1 has a better build quality, but is it really so much better that they are selling for up to GBP 150.00 on EBay when the MK2 can be bought for as little as GBP 75.00, new.

Is it worth spending up to twice as much on a second hand MK1?

I bought a new Mk2 - Paid about £68 on line somewhere...
It has a very cheap feel to it (it weighs nothing!) but it performs well and I am happy with it!

If you'd have to pay £150 for a 50/1.8 mkI you might also consider the 50/1.4.

I've had a mkI and two mkIIs, and I found that my mkI was a little sharper, but when I went back and compared them I think it was more a matter of one the mkIIs being a soft copy.

The mkI has a more substantial feel to it, it's slightly easier to use the focus ring, and it has the distance scale on it.

I thought the mkI was worth the $120 price tag I paid for it, but the difference in 75 and 150 pounds is much greater than $70 and $120...
